I’ve always liked this race for some reason. It’s not always the most competitive G2, but it seems to take a certain type of horse to win it. The trainer to follow has to be M.Stoute, his ten-year record in the race is 28123121, with horses like Little Rock and Gamut running in consecutive years. On first glance, this has all the makings of a Papal Bull benefit, although I’m not sure how many would be willing to take a really short price about him.

    Any ideas ?

Given how well the Coronation Cup is working out and that he is unpenalised for last year’s win, it hard to look past Papal Bull I agree. The likes of Sulamani have been undone by a Griup 1 penalty in this and I think it will be too much of a burden for Lucarno.

My immediate reaction when I saw Papal Bull at 7/2, was that he was over priced. That has been tempered a little bit by the fact the race may be run on softish ground. Papal Bull has twice run very modestly on good to soft going.

If Sagara returned to anything like his Arc form, he would be very dangerous. The trip and the likely going would be in his favour on Thursday. His form has got a bit of an inconsistant look to it though, even when he was trained in France.

Still think 7/2 is a very fair price for Papal Bull. Probably have a saver on Sagara as well. Hope the ground doesn’t get too soft for PB!

Much as I like Papal Bull and give him a favorites chance I am am tempted to have a little go on Galactic Star to put in a better run this time. Same at longer odds with Halicarnassus.

I fancy Sagara a bit in this. Think the softish ground should suit him and his Gold Cup run wasnt that bad. If he comes anywhere near last years Arc run he’ll sluice in. Big if though.

    Hello,

It is only the ground that worries me about The Papal Bull benefit, so I will leave alone.
I maybe a fool (do I hear the sound of nodding heads), but I still fancy the occassionally badly behaved Bull for the Arc..

    regards,

Can’t see Papal Bull handling the holding ground. I make it between Anna Pavlova and Sagara, with preference for the former.

Isn’t this in the wrong section now?

    Have not played as yet.

Hope to see Sagara and Papal Bull in the paddock (on tv) both temperamental.
Quite interested in Lion Sands at the price, anyone know what type of action he has? If he acts is improving.
    Lucarno looks best on firmer.
Petara Bay is not good enough on all known form.
Anna looks plenty short enough on form but if others play up could well still be value (if that makes sense).

Yes and no as it hasn’t been moved to the big race discussion thread.

Anyway the field has cut up with Happy Boy, Shahin, Gulf Express and Galactic Star now non-runners and Halicarnassus doubtful. Papal Bull if he behaves himself and handles the ground ought to win but he has lost his pace maker and I think Anna Palova may be a safer bet as long as the race hasn’t come too soon for her.

I think Lion Sands is possibly over priced as he should in theory love the cut and comes here in form. With Galactic Star out and Halicarnassus eing well unsuited to the ground (and probably a non runner), I’ll probably go Lion Sands and a reverse f/c on Papal Bull and Lion Sands

It’s a race I couldn’t go near now. Wouldn’t have a clue where the pace is going to come from and Papal Bull needs a truly-run race. Time of first race suggests it’s not as soft as the official either which means it may not be enough of a test for Anna Pavlova. I think Lion Sands needs further in this grade. Difficult to know what to expect from Godolphin and think you’ll need everything to be below it’s best for Lucarno to give weight all round.

Just noticed an official going change to good to soft.

Very good point about the pace angle David. I would expect either Lucarno or possibly the outsider Petara Bay to go on, but they are by no means certain to do so.

Nice to see someone telling the whole truth for a change about one of their horses temperament. Simon Christian’s inteview on Sagara.

He basically said he wouldn’t trust him to tell him today was Thursday and he had no idea how he’d run!

A complete joke. Jockeys really are thickest species going.
