I’m starting this thread, to post in when I remember, to chart horses of potential and see who we can come up with. It would be great if people joined in, please feel free to add as you fancy. I’ll start by noting Raabihah that won the opener at Longchamp today. She impressed on her debut to score by 3 lengths and today she looked impressive putting to bed a field of 5 by 4 lengths. She covered the pace and race tactics easily and inside the final 300 metres she showed an impressive turn of foot to go away from the field easily and won with any amount in hand. She is 2/2 now with a listed race to her name and proven to stay over at least 11f. I thought she would have been an interesting Oaks filly, but not sure how travel could effect that?
If you haven’t seen the race, it is available on ATR and France-gallop.
Pau Alto looked smart today also, I think he beat a fair type in Ocean Atlantique and had the rest of field well beaten in which it didn’t look a bad field with plenty of horses of potential.
May 14, 2020 at 19:33 #1488263A lesser known light I have in my formbook is Cold Light Of Day for Michael Dods and Kirsten Rausing. I first noted this horse on her debut at Redcar over 6f. She ran on quite well late in the piece and ultimately the 6f proved way too short. I marked her as one for a three old season as she looks certain to be better suited by longer distances. Rausing horses are often campaigned this way and her pedigree screams stamina. Her dam won up to 12f and her sire, Sea The Moon also won at 12f. She is related to some flat types that have favoured a longer distance, indeed with one half brother winning up to 2 miles, and a few went on to race over jumps winning up to the extended 3 miles.
So she is packed full of stamina, she will begin her three year old campaign off a lowly rating of 65 and I firmly expect there to be some improvement as she steps up in distance and could prove well handicapped in the capable hands of Michael Dods.
May 14, 2020 at 21:08 #1488271Nice thread TB.
Every year i seem to pick up on an eyecatcher from those back end Newmarket maiden races. By the time the spring comes round i have convinced myself i have spotted the next Nashwan. The only one i got right was Cracksman and still never won a penny off him.
This years one to avoid is Al Aasy. A Sea the stars colt trained by Mr. Haggas.
May 15, 2020 at 16:01 #1488324I took a strong liking to Roulston Scar last year and felt he was a horse still with plenty of potential. I thought he won smartly at Redcar last season and was a sprinter on the up. Sprinters often get better with age as the continue to develop and I think he could have a good season this year. He won in Meydan back in January but was a no show on his last performance over there. He has moved from Kevin Ryan to Simon Crisford since last season so it would be interesting to see how he fares in new hands.
May 15, 2020 at 16:12 #1488326Another interesting young horse to keep on side is Apollinaire for Ralph Beckett. He was hugely unlucky not to win on his last start at Wolverhampton on handicap debut. Having raced in last from stall 9 he ran into trouble two out and did not get a clear run all the way down into the final furlong. He absolutely flew home when he was clear and was unlucky. It was an interesting run in that in his three previous runs he had made the running, so he is clearly suited to hold up tactics too. He is a likable, genuine type. He has not been out of the first two yet, and further more, I like that he has won on debut. Then also his last race came off a 164 day lay off and he ran up to best again, so he seems to go well fresh, which should ease fears when he comes back to the track. Although his last run was on the AW he has run well on good, good to firm and soft so he is hugely versatile. I think he is potentially well treated and if he trains on well from two to three he could be one to keep on side this season.
May 16, 2020 at 12:22 #1488366be interesting to see these in a list where we can track them and update the results for each TBR and follow then through the year? Like a post with them listed which you can edit to add in results?
May 16, 2020 at 17:55 #1488415An interesting one that is a little more left of field is Global Prospector for Clive Cox. It is a while now since his debut at Wolverhampton in March 2019. But he was hugely impressive. He got across from the widest gate in 13 to hit the front and make all by 3 lengths, setting a fair pace in front and coming home in a reasonable time for debut. The performance is well worth a look and he seems a horse with a lot of ability, I think he could potentially be group class. He went off 1/2 next start at Bath and bombed out, presumably there was a problem as he has not been seen since. But interestingly from his Wolverhampton debut, he had Moss Gill back in 2nd well beaten who has gone on to be rated 105 as he stands and recording a best RPR of 109, and back in 4th also was a filly of James Tate’s called Wise Words who is now rated 94 by the handicapper and achieved a best RPR last season of 99. All this points to the idea that Global Prospector could be a very smart horse and I am eagerly anticipating his return to the track.

May 18, 2020 at 01:56 #1488516Good stuff Tim, I’ll add my own soon.
I did have a list of prospects for this year, but two months later, it might need freshening up.
May 18, 2020 at 09:32 #1488526Russian Emperor – Made an eyecatching run on debut last year and must of retired a few 999/1 layers when breaking his maiden before lockdown at Naas.
Safe to say a step up in trip will suit and the Jockey was full of praise saying ” He’s a group horse and if he gets a mile-and-a-half he’s top notch.”
May 20, 2020 at 18:11 #1488686Yeah i’d agree there. She looks very promising. Nice one to go to war with in your first season even if he did trainer her last year too! Looked like she had plenty of improvement in her NW!

Irish colt [Jim Bolger]
Did not win as a 2 year old but showed lots of promise despite being keen in most of his runs.
Showed what he is capable of despite that when finishing 3rd in a G2 to Mogul
May 22, 2020 at 12:25 #1488789I’ll be adding this one to my thread shortly too, but i’ve just started looking through Weld’s 2yos with a view to their 3yo campaigns.
Another Filly:
Mazara form 32
First angle towards this is, the trainer Dermot Weld is much more of a 3yo + up trainer than a 2yo trainer. He is very patient and often they progress at 3. He also has much better numbers when stepping a horse up in trip, and is probably the only trainer in Ireland capable of challenging O’Brien in this area.
The filly herself is out of Massinga, who was a listed filly for Weld and liked soft ground. Her best run was over 1m4, but i suspect if we saw more of her she might’ve been better over even further given her stoute staying pedigree. Being sired by Siyouni, she probably has a bit more pace than her mother but i think she’ll end up better over further than a mile.
Her runs at 2 were promising. Her first run she had a few bumps approaching 1f out and when she met the hill she powered home behind Fancy Blue. Siamese was 4th that day, a furlong out she was in front of Mazara, and much better positioned, but ended up 2ls behind her. Siamese has won next time out. Mazara went out to be caught on the line by a filly of Josephs when 4/7f at Galway. I think she might have got there a bit too soon, and i wouldn’t be worried at this early stage about attitude.
Interesting that she still holds a Irish 1000G entry, i had hoped when looking to see an Irish Oaks entry as that would match my view that she needs stepping up in trip.Anyway, another filly i’ll keep an eye on.

Another maiden [Richard Hannon]
Was only 9-2 to win a G3 on last run as a 2 year old behind Wichita, but did not live up to those expectations
Still looked a work in progress though
May 27, 2020 at 09:42 #1488976Luncies made an encouraging winning debut for Simon Crisford at Lingfield just before shutdown. The three-year-old was a bit green away from the gates but soon settled well to rear of mid division. He travelled well down to the turn for home and when the eventual second kicked on a couple of lengths, Luncies quickened well to cover the move and then stay on strongly up the home straight pulling clear all the way to the line.
He could enter handicaps off a very winnable mark with more improvement to come. He is a half brother the talented Watersmeet who stayed 2 miles. I wouldn’t pin Luncies as a 2 miler, he has more speed emphasis on his sires side in Iffraaj, but his dam has produced notable stayers in Watersmeet and Great Return. The dam was owned by the same owners and won at listed level up to 10f and ran into the 100s on many occasions, there is plenty of ability in his pedigree and 10f could certainly be on the radar.
May 27, 2020 at 10:15 #1488978Check out the debut of Pale King on ATR for David Simcock. Visually it was a very impressive win, not sure the form is worth a lot at this point but he could not have done it any easier. Slow away and hampered at the gates he settled into rear, he made effortless headway through the race at every stage and down into the final furlong or so Spencer was still on the bridle looking around for dangers, he seemed to have a lot of horse still under neath him. Shaken up he quickened well and put the race to bed easily giving the impression he had a lot in hand.
