Sad to hear that he has died. He trained some high class horses.
RIP
February 14, 2025 at 17:37 #1720518One of those names many of us grew up with in our formative years following racing.
My most sincere condolences to his family and friends.
February 14, 2025 at 18:01 #1720522Grateful if mods could remove the “t” I inadvertently included in Mr Johnson Houghton’s surname.
February 14, 2025 at 18:19 #1720526I didn’t realize he had that much success in the 60s and 70s. Clearly a man who went for quality rather than quantity.
May he rest in peace
February 14, 2025 at 19:56 #1720530Funny that. My late and possibly dyslexic dad used to call him “Fluke” Johnson Houghton. No fluke though when we backed his horse, Sobriety, to win the John Smiths Cup at York back in 2000, five days before I got married. One of the reasons I’m always very happy to follow Eve’s horses almost blindly on the same course…
February 14, 2025 at 22:05 #1720548A few years back I was talking to a fellow member of our Rotary Club here in West Fife, Stephanie Blackden, who sadly passed away in 2023. When she learnt that I was a keen racing fan and had lived in Didcot she asked if I knew Blewbury, which is indeed a village with I’m familiar. Stephanie recalled riding horses when she was young with the Johnson-Houghtons, Fulke and his elder sister. She knew that Fulke had been a successful trainer and it was great to hear stories from his youth and I was able to fill in a few details of his training career.
Fulke lived a a full and successful life. R.I.P.
