It’s very hard to know whether he is just so good that it doesn’t matter how poorly he is ridden. In the Guineas he ran away with TQ and had he made it to the Bandstand, Henry would have had a reasonable idea that he might stay the Derby trip. I just have a nagging doubt that in trying to get him to run over 10f, they are denying the public the chance to see him at his very best as we would over 6 or 7 furlongs where he would have no need to be restrained.

Sorry EF but can’t agree with any of this.

He did not run away with TQ in the Guineas. It was the plan to let him gallop and that is what he did. TQ rode one poor race on him all year in the SJP.

Henry had a perfectly reasonable idea that he would not stay the Derby trip and that is why he did not run him.

As for denying the public the chance to see him at his best over 6 or 7 furlongs. Well firstly we HAVE seen him over 7 furlongs – three times. Secondly there are no Group 1 races over 7 furlongs anyway and thirdly do you really think the majority of the public would want to see him in the July Cup and Temple Stakes over the Eclipse, Juddmonte and Champion? How many legendary sprinters can you name?

Besides, as I am sure you know, horses tend to be able to get further as they get older and it is very rare to find Group 1 winning milers dropping back in distance.

I get your point, you want to see him do what he did at Newmarket and just run as fast as he can. Unfortunately for you that won’t happen but I honestly doubt the public will feel short changed.

"this perfect mix of poetry and destruction, this glory of rhythm, power and majesty: the undisputed champion of the world!!!"
