Over here – the forum admin makes sure to use plenty of salt.
Here at TRF, I think this is more of a professional style of forum. It is why I appreciate it a little more. I say this, you don’t like? You say exactly that, and counter-argue. Discussion begins. Happy days.
February 28, 2008 at 00:07 #147011It’s at times like this when I always like to look back at this…
February 28, 2008 at 00:13 #147012the Australian racing forum I am a member of is well … the title reads: "if you are easily offended, this might not be the best forum for you." I say Horse A can’t win … think of the darkest, most despicable response piled with horrible expletives … that is the reply.

No such caveat exists here, Myles, although I’m sure that the pre-upgrade version of TRF’s homepage made it a little more explicit that polite – as well as passionate and intelligent – discussion was requested, and that rougher stuff was not.
Something, perhaps, for Corm to consider re-writing into the homepage when the opportunity next arises? I’ve just checked a couple of other racing fora I read regularly, and such "no abuse" messages can be found on both.

February 28, 2008 at 00:16 #147013Im newish and to be honest i have always been happy at how i have been treated but i do believe there is a litlle bit of a snobbish element on this and all forums.
When i say that i refer to the 5 stars next to most of your names, but the 1 next to mine etc etc. I often feel people only look for the comments of those they know.
I guess its understandable but it is quite annoying at times.
No offence intended.

I generally read everyones comments and generally reply to any if I feel I have a point to make in the discussion, I think sometimes people will appear to be replying to certain comments because certain comments they agree or disgaree with, and at times it may appear that yours have been discarded but they wont be, people will probably agree but just havent posted as such, if they disagree you’ll soon find out…lol
I personally dont pay much attention to the stars structure, for all I know lester piggott or aiden o’brien could be secretly posting on here with one star.
February 28, 2008 at 00:39 #147020I don’t think many people care about the stars, but I know I certainly ignore certain posters and pay a lot more attention to others.
February 28, 2008 at 00:55 #147022This place has always been very, very cliquey-to a sickening extent in the past-not as bad as it was,but still bad.
February 28, 2008 at 01:12 #147024I wouldn’t go along with that, Jilly. Inevitably on any forum there will be some gravitating of certain posters sharing similar views and ideals towards each other, but that does not happen here to the extent that the term "clique" in its most negative connotation might apply.
It’s not as if every time one person posts, the same 29 other posters always automatically nod without recourse to their own critical apparatus.

February 28, 2008 at 08:13 #147057One piece of etiquette I’d like to see kept to more often is the correct use of posters’ names when replying to threads.
It’s annoying to read something like "Oh Jeremy, I don’t quite agree with you there", then fruitlessly looking back up the thread thinking "Who the ****’s Jeremy?". It also makes the forum appear cliquey.
February 28, 2008 at 08:26 #147059I’m not sure I see what the problem is.
It’s quite simple, you hurl as much abuse as you feel like at anybody who disagrees with you, calling them whatever names take your fancy.
Then just simply add a

Job done – no offence meant !

Agreed indeed, though to be fair GC (that’s graysonscolumn to you) does often sign off as Jeremy

Thanks for instigating an entertaining thread Aranalde, beats watching Trisha of a morning

February 28, 2008 at 10:24 #147078Venusian, Drone (real names withheld
),All points duly noted, though I’d hate to think my occasional recourse to first-name terms perpetuates any idea of cliqueism on TRF. I’m sure any self-respecting clique would tire of a mulleted, speccy librarian and racing media nonentity with Cartmel Tourettes pretty quickly! I guess I simply prefer the more familiarity of the first name on what is, after all, meant to be a friendly and congenial forum.
As a rule I tend to sign off short or frivolous posts as “gc”, as “Jeremy (graysonscolumn)” would in a lot of cases be longer than the posting itself! Fuller or – to my mind, anyway – more worthy posts get the full signature.
Where known, I tend to use first names only of the person who posted immediately beforehand and to whom I’m replying (so you’re right re: TWW, Drone), or else of the poster whose post I’ve partly or wholly reproduced in my reply.
Doubtless, though, there are going to be some easy enough to find examples where I’ve occasionally done the opposite, which serves to undermime the above! I’ll look to be more careful hereon.

You people aren’t lawyers in real life are you?
February 28, 2008 at 11:02 #147086I agree with Andrew, luckily I don’t think I’ve said anything absolutely stupid (I hope) that has warranted a heckling but as a novice I have noticed some of the senior posters can be quite harsh at times and it is rather intimidating!
Luckily a lot of you are great chaps and have been a great help in the past, taking time out to explain things in great detail, especially Mikky recently.
