I lived in Sheffield as a child and well remember the “Green’Un” headline “Blades trounced” upon returning from Anfield having witnessed a five-nil drubbing in 1972.
I also had the privilege to work with Len Martin, the unique voice of the football results (and racing betting shows and results) on Grandstand back in the day.
I also remember “Sports Report” and its superb theme tune, never more so than when driving home from Doncaster St Leger Day in 1978 – not that Julio Mariner and Edward Hide got much of a mention!

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"August 9, 2022 at 08:12 #1610534A couple of other papers joining the I in condemning it as ‘cultural vandalism’ and expressing OUTRAGE.
I wonder did any of their dozens of journalists notice this and submit an article for Sunday, Monday or Tuesday? Or did they only find out about it when the BBC pointed it out to them?

August 9, 2022 at 11:31 #1610549ALL WE HEAR
IS RADIO DON’T DO
RADIO PHEW PHEW
RADIO REAR VIEW
‘This was highlighted in a 2013 study at Ben-Gurion University in Israel, where teen drivers were tested on their driving skills while listening to various music playlists. Of the 85 subjects, 98% made errors when listening to their own music – and 17 actually required instructor intervention to prevent a collision. By comparison, 77% made errors when listening to safe-driving music, which consisted of easy listening, soft rock, and light jazz accompaniments.
While we can’t say never listen to music you enjoy, it’s a good idea to keep in mind the potential for distraction when you’re jamming out to your mixtape on the road.’
Our Verdict: Better Safe Than Sorry
You may look at this data and think it doe does matter what you listen too.’NO NO NO you young jackasnape IRRIOT !!! – I look at your data and tell you and warn you… WRONG WRONG WRONG.
There is no such thing as safe driving music. Forget jamming – the operative word is peeling and looking for oddities on the road and predicting what they might do.The Scouts message BE PREPARED is useful here…
If you are on a motorway on the inside lane and you have got a large artic behind you and one in front –
THE LIST
1. Remain calm, but remember you are sitting in a tin bomb on wheels.
2. Check you are on a motorway.
3. Check rear view and side to see all safe.
4. Indicate for three seconds or four before moving SLOWLY out to the right hand lane.
5 Look for a motorway rest home to take five minutes of deep breathing and get your Mojo back.
6. Distribute written warnings to cars parked near the little chef of the dangers of radios.
7. If either of the artics had a seagull emblazoned on it and a little old man in the passenger – ring the police and take a toilet break if you need it – the police can be nasty and possibly in league with the two wanted.
8. Continue on with your journey making sure your mannequin is safely secured in the back and you’ve got your ‘granny on board’ sticker displayed in the back window.
9. Drive no faster than 60 mph but preferably 50-55 if there is a 70 limit
10. Think exclusively road and death and exclude your mind of any little distractions like what’s the hell’s for tea !

August 9, 2022 at 18:49 #1610599Don’t think racing results have been on BBC radio for many years. They used to be on the sports bulletin at 30 mins past the hour but that must have been phased out at least 10 years ago.
I’m amazed the R4 Today programme still bothers with the “tips” seeing as a) no context regarding the selection is given (they could be made by an amoeba for all we are told) b) the “serious” presenters view this item as something to be either sneered at or derided – what purpose does it serve?
Still, getting rid of the “Classified Football Results” (I used to think they were top secret) will free up some more time for them to plug “BBC Sounds” and/or devote to cackling presenters “bantering” with each other (R Savage comfortably the worst of these although to be fair Clinton “to be fair” Morrison isn’t far behind to be fair).
August 10, 2022 at 17:36 #1610669They can’t spare a few minutes, once a week for the football results but can spare 7 hours of prime time on BBC2 on a Thursday for the abomination of Women’s and Men’s Hundred’s. The sooner the licence fee is abolished the better.

Northern Super Chargers v Trent Rockets.
Seriously, does anyone care?

August 11, 2022 at 15:55 #1610723“Here’s a thought. Maybe it is all a cynical ploy by the BBC to get some free publicity for “Sports Report”. Then they will restore the results service in response to customer demand and look like the good guys.”
Or they may consider returning it when the listening figures at that time hit zero with everyone switching over to talksport to hear the full times

August 11, 2022 at 16:01 #1610724I maintain that we would not be having this conversation had it not been announced. There was no media comment on Saturday or Sunday that I saw, that only came on Monday after it was announced. Maybe after a few weeks people would have started noticing that it was gone.
August 12, 2022 at 19:15 #1610827It’s only the results. They are not going to change once they are in. These can be viewed at any time.
I remember watching Grandstand and them showing the Racing results and then the footie scores or was it the other way round
August 12, 2022 at 19:26 #1610833“They are not going to change once they are in.”
Unless Man U are invited back out to take a penalty again.
August 12, 2022 at 19:27 #1610836Racing result changed on me once, listening to a race in my local bookies (before they were televised) my horse won, only for a steward’s enquiry to disqualify it before I went into the next bookies.

You've got to accentuate the positive.
Eliminate the negative.
Latch on to the affirmative.
Don't mess with mister in between.August 13, 2022 at 22:35 #1610980Talk Sport apparently did a full broadcast of the classified results. I assume they can look forward to listening figures of 20 million plus when they are released.
