Apologies if this has already been mentioned anywhere else but what on earth is going on ?
I realise the start of the turf season would be clear and more organised if Doncaster was available but the current situation is bordering on a farce.
Last Sat was last day of aw season at Lingfield. Today is start of "turf" season – on aw at Lingfield !
What did winners of last 5 aw meetings between Sun and yesterday class as ?
Did a new aw weather season start on Sunday or did those winners betw Sun-Wed class as turf ? They couldn’t because today is classed as start of turf.
Is there a simple way of summing this up or am i missing something ?
March 29, 2007 at 10:19 #49067
I think what you’re missing is that flat racing now takes place all year round and the concept of a ‘season’ is pointless.
Apart from being the start date for the mostly irrelevant trainer and jockey titles, what else does today signify?

March 29, 2007 at 11:33 #49068Hello,
The "authorities" and press have discussed for years’ about setting a definitive day and bringing the Flat Season in with a "bang". i.e. The Lincoln, Brocklesby, and supporting, good prize races’ all on one day, televised etc……
But nowt’s been done…:(
regards,
doyley
March 29, 2007 at 11:36 #49069Accoprding to todays RP today and tomorrow don’t count towards the respective titles.

So presmably that means, to be totally fair to everyone, we now have an AW Season, a Turf Flat Season, and the ‘Last week in March in betweenie bit not quite sure what it is’ Season?

March 29, 2007 at 12:14 #49074I would have thought it was obviously the beginning of the new all weather season, then today is the beginning of the flat(although due to renevation its on the AW). Didn’t the old jump seasons used to do the same ?
March 29, 2007 at 12:33 #49075Next year when Doncaster will be staging their usual opening 3 day meeting, the Thursday & Friday will not be counted as part of the flat season. The Flat season will start the day of the Lincoln and end with the November Handicap.
Which is no more than you’d expect from the great minds that gave us a jump season that ends partway through, and starts again the following day?:)
March 29, 2007 at 16:34 #49078Its an absolute farce. Whats more annoying is that it really isn’t a difficult problem to solve.
Flat season begin with Doncaster (this year Newcastle) Lincoln meeting end as it does in November. Simple.
All weather – well personally I’d have it through the winter just to ensure no blank days but no the authorities insist on trying to promote this artificial junk so leave the all weather to itself. If it has to go on all year then make it seasonless where everything counts towards nothing with regards to the turf.
The jumps season is another mess, I don’t agree with summer jumping. Begin the season sometime in October, end it in May after the Whitbread / Betfair (whatever sponsorship it has).
There all simple and orderly.
All flat racing should count from 1st Jan till 31 Dec, unless of course you want a championship for every type of going/track.
As for the jumps season personally i’d start at 23.59 on dec 24 and let it run until 23.59 on dec 25 ;)
as for your junk, uncompetitive racing is junk whatever the surface or code. No wonder VR is so popular during the jumping season :)
