Has any one got any info on this horse please?
I have tryed the net but no luck
November 27, 2009 at 12:20 #260737Courtesy of the Telegraph Chronicle of Horse Racing, I can tell you he won the 1946 July Cup at Newmarket as a 3-y-old, ridden by Charlie Smirke, starting 8/11 fav, beating the 1945 winner Honeyway, who had to give him 18lbs.
It mentions that The Bug was trained in Ireland, but doesn’t name the trainer.
AP
November 27, 2009 at 16:04 #260804He also won the 1946 Wokingham Stakes (no info on trainer or jockey) as a 3-y-o carrying 8st 7lb at 7/1 against 20 opponents.
He must have raced on for a few more seasons as his first crop raced in 1951. He had 7 runners representing him and he finished 7th in the list of 1st season sires. His progeny won 4 races that year in GB & Ireland (1 colt and 2 fillies were winners), earning a total of £1,770. His stud fee was £199 – 1 shilling.
Can’t get any more details yet (all this was from "The Racing Review 1952). He had a yearling sell at Goffs ( a chestnut colt) to Sir V. Sassoon for 1,600gns – the mare was Hunter’s Cloud.
Haven’t had time to delve around too much, hope to have a bit more time next week, but have got rid of a lot of my old racing books so am not too optimistic of finding much.
I have a sneaky feeling that this animal, in spite of being a sprinter, features in the pedigree of an outstanding NH performer. Haven’t a clue why I think that, it just rings a bell.November 27, 2009 at 16:07 #260805From googling:-www.racenewsonline…
"Irish punters took some £50000 out of the betting ring in 1946 when The Bug won the Wokingham at 7/1."
"David Wachman
David Wachman is not the first member of his family to make a splash in the racing world. His grandfather Norman was a famous punter who owned The Bug, a sprinter who cantered home in the 1946 Wokingham Handicap at Royal Ascot as a three-year-old to land a gamble that would be worth more than 1 million in todays money. The Bug went on to win the July Cup, Nunthorpe Stakes and Diadem Stakes"From carlow.tcm:-
The war put a stop to Royal Ascot until 1946. However, ‘Ginger’ Wellesley, then training in the Phoenix Park, had a ‘flying machine’ in The Bug, owned by David Wachman’s grandfather, Norman Wachman. Set to defy a weight at which no three-year-old had ever won the Wokingham Handicap, The Bug made all under Charlie Smirke to land his owner’s gamble at 7/1.November 27, 2009 at 16:18 #2608061946 July Cup

Poss American horse. No, UK and Irish breeding – the first American horse in his pedigree is Rhoda B, 4 generations back.
November 27, 2009 at 18:55 #260842We’ve come across Orby on the Classic Winning Owners’ Colours thread.
Orby was owned by Richard Croker, who was a big wheel in Tammany Hall until basically he did a runner over here.
Despite winning the Derby, Orby set up a line of sprinters.
He was mated with Rhoda B in The Bug’s pedigree. . .
[edit: sorry, on the Stella. Rhoda B was the dam of Orby, which makes it more likely that she was Croker’s.]presumably, Rhoda B was owned by Richard Croker, and he brought her over here?
November 27, 2009 at 19:58 #260854Yes, he brought her over along with Americus and also Dobbins, the horse that dead-heated with Domino in the famous match race but broke down before he could run here.
There would be a good film to be made about "Boss" Croker.
November 27, 2009 at 20:13 #260859Stupid question Venusian, but you wouldn’t happen to know what Croker’s colours were, would you?
November 27, 2009 at 20:51 #260867Gerald , your devotion to the cause humbles me.
cheers Sir.
