Best we all just forget about this IMO, draw a line under it, and hope fists returns.
January 27, 2009 at 01:03 #206665Nothing wrong with this thread at all. As Carvillshill said, he thought the man in question would be a little more thick-skinned. After all the abuse and criticism he dished out, you’d have thought he’d have been able to take a little in return. To suggest that he has been bullied is hilarious.
To be honest, last spring I stopped reading the Cheltenham threads because they all degenerated into tedious and often unpleasant ‘debates’ – remarkably similar in tone to the kind of ‘debates’ my daughter and her primary school friends get into if they’re up after their bedtime. Invariably, the man himself was at the bottom of them.
Hopefully now some of the people who were deterred from posting while he was here will return.
I’m aware that some people found him entertaining and that I may be in a minority. But whenever I saw his name on a thread, I expected a long, rambling, only partially coherent tirade, interspersed with charmless insults, tiresome boasting and complete contempt for anyone who disagreed with him. Invariably, he didn’t disappoint.
January 27, 2009 at 01:58 #206675thats the whole point of bullying; the people doing it can always argue that they didn’t think the person being bullied would be upset by it..and if Fist was so awful in your eyes why condone someone stooping to this level to prove a point? whether or not you agree that Fist ‘deserved’ this thread surely you cannot argue against the fact that it was done in a bullying way? I don’t think anyone deserves to be treated in this way.
January 27, 2009 at 02:12 #206676(Edited for tone)
Any bullying is to be condemned. I really don’t think this comes into that category. There was no abuse, no mockery, nothing but a simple lists of bets that Fists himself had announced on a forum where betting is part and parcel of discussions every day. Right now, there are dozens of threads in which people put forward their bets. All of these bets were publically declared by Fists, indeed brandished as examples of his expertise. Listing them is hardly bullying.
If anything, by the obnoxious way in which he treated people when he first arrived on the forum, his rudeness, his rapid resorting to abuse and his regular demonstrations of contempt for the opinions of others, Fists was the bully.
January 27, 2009 at 02:49 #206684Guys – I really don’t want this thread to be the subject of further animosity. I don’t think I handled the thread well and could have averted the problems it caused. Not Carvills fault, not Fist’s fault but mine. I, like Carvills, didn’t think Fist would have taken it so personally.
If we can move on without more fallout I’d be very grateful.
Perhaps I should delete this thread – ?
January 27, 2009 at 03:41 #206696Hi Corm,
Even though you chose to delete my sincere all-party reconcilitory post and I subsequently acknowledged respecting your decision, I must admit to being surprised that members were allowed to continue posting polarised views on the matter. However, I genuinely understand the dilemma you found yourself in. Caught between two ‘stools’ springs to mind.
I feel sure that if Fist is aware that, although he has ostracised himself from some members, there are others who appear to welcome his more mellow contributions.
On the grounds that I am usually opposed to censorship, except in the most extreme circumstances, might it not be possible to retain the thread as a historical fact but lock out any further postings. It’s retention might serve some useful purpose as a reminder to all of us to be more respectful and tolerant toward other members.
Cheers
KenJanuary 27, 2009 at 03:45 #206697Corm,
I echo Ken’s sentiments, locking it would be better than deleting. Fist did say on page 2 he’d rather it was kept.

Value Is EverythingJanuary 27, 2009 at 03:51 #206698hope you are not blaming me for his departure
No I’m not Gingertips; as I mentioned it was more likely than not
(55.6%)
he’d go into a self-imposed exile at some time. Burma is nice at this time of year.
83.3%
the Loud Return of the Prodigal should Binocular piss-up at Cheltenham.

Top man, Drone.

Shame about Fists. He had definitely mellowed of late, and I hope he posts again.
I do think it important to laugh at oneself.

February 4, 2009 at 13:49 #208094My bet is Corm will delete this now
as it makes you look like a spoilt little boy who can’t see green cheese going past him and we can’t have that can we? I would prefer it was left up to show people what kind of person you are if they don’t already know.
Go on Corm, at least allow Fist of Fury to go out on a winning bet for once….
March 5, 2009 at 20:48 #213617He shouldn’t have thrown the toys out the pram, and this thread wasn’t necessary in the first place. Taking someones bets as level stake just isn’t on.
Hopefully he will return BEFORE Binocular runs, and i hope it wins.
