What sad news. The horse was shown standing up after his fall, and looked a bit tired but otherwise sound.
Such a shame he never got to fulfil his undoubted talent.
December 9, 2024 at 15:39 #1715094Oh poor Ferny.
He looked wrong behind when he got up and Patrick looked concerned. Perhaps a pelvic fracture that caused a bleed, or spinal cord trauma that worsened quickly.
What a fabulous, beautiful horse with a proper racing spirit.December 9, 2024 at 15:57 #1715095Just read the article, very sad news indeed. The 2nd last at Cork is the final ditch, maybe he injured a hind leg during take-off.
Very fragile and highly talented and only finished either 1st or 2nd throughout his unexposed career.
May he rest in peace
December 9, 2024 at 16:46 #1715096Very sad , we didn’t get the chance to see how good he could be , fragile but oh so talented
December 9, 2024 at 17:50 #1715107Sad news. RIP.
December 9, 2024 at 18:42 #1715115So sad to be reading this. I watched the race and thought he looked peculiar the way he was standing when he got up. But during the interview with Willie, he said he’d come back ok so I was really relieved.
I wonder what happened to him? I guess we’ll never know. Poor Ferny Hollow. RIP 😢
December 9, 2024 at 18:51 #1715117He definitely didn’t look right when he got up.
Also read on twitter that statements from the trainer had been made saying he was ok and at home while it was well known he had already been euthanised. All very odd
December 9, 2024 at 19:03 #1715119Terribly sad news, poor Ferny Hollow
his only fall in racing to, resulting in injuries he sustained and him being put to sleep after

Don’t believe everything you read on twitter. I suspect he meant “home” in the sense of “back in the racecourse stables” as this RTE report on the day is timed at 4.30 on Sunday afternoon and it takes 2 hours to get from Cork to Carlow:
https://www.rte.ie/sport/racing/2024/1208/1485327-energumene-makes-return-with-victory-in-hilly-way/
And of course the comment could have been made to RTE any time before that.
From what I can see- though who knows as reporting is often inaccurate- he died rather than being euthanased. Which would support a torn blood vessel or ruptured spleen, or fracture that subsequently displaced- any of which might go from looking “sore but going to be OK” to down at any point in the hours following the injury.
It happens to people too. Natasha Richardson fell in a beginners ski lesson and only complained of a bad headache 2 hours later. She died in hospital 2 days later.
December 9, 2024 at 22:20 #1715138Oh how sad that he didn’t make it. I thought he had a problem on the brief view we had after his fall, I feared the worst RIP 💔
December 10, 2024 at 18:46 #1715191💔 I didnt see the race and just found this out today. I knew Energumene had won but nothing was said at the time that Ferny had suffered a fatal injury.
Desperately sad news, what a beautiful talented horse he was.
RIP Ferny Hollow 😓Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out... - AuthorPosts
