Hi all, Firstly apologies if this topic has already been discussed before, if it has not what are your favourites.
Will be back with some of mine later.
December 5, 2007 at 17:36 #128962Hi Marb, yes excellent choice, would have got a mention from me, having conquered what he had and then to do that hat’s of to him.
One of my favourites was another great story Dessie’s Gold Cup, which i had the privelage of being at will stick with me for ever aswell.
December 5, 2007 at 17:45 #128963Hello,
NORTONS COIN winning the 1989? Gold Cup @ 100/1, but I was a clever boy and availed myself with 200/1 at Ladbrokes!!
Graham McCourt put in a marvellous performance, pipping Mark Pitman on Toby Tobias, I think.
I still say to this day that if the jockeys were reversed, Graham would still be celebrating a Gold Cup victory, but with Toby…
Second, on the flat, would be one of the best last to first performances’ ever by a horse called ARAZI, in the USA….you would have to see it to believe it!!
regards,
doyley
December 5, 2007 at 18:00 #128968Nice to see you talk about a different sport for a change Adrian
I have a few moments that stick in the memory. Frankie going through the card at Ascot, Dessie winning the Gold Cup, likewise Dawn Run.
But my best racing moment by far was all the hype around Zafonic leading up to the 2,000 Guineas. Big Mac was brilliant, he wouldn’t hear of defeat for the horse.
Then the race…. GG’s commentary will long live in the memory… "he’s pulling double, Zafonic is absolutely pulling double" – before Zafonic slammed the brilliant Barathea. Such a shame he flopped at Goodwood before being retired.

December 5, 2007 at 18:12 #128969Hi Mike, yes nice to have a look at something different for a change, i was kind of hoping that no one would remind me of Dawn Run Nothing against her winning it but on this particular occasion she left an unrepairable hole in the wallet , thankfully it did not last long, but yes another great moment all the same

Breeders Cup Classic 2000 & 2001 TiznowDecember 5, 2007 at 18:47 #128975From a betting view, I would put Best Mate’s first Gold Cup win as one of my favorites because when he previously just lost at Kempton with Tony McCoy in the saddle, Tony said afterwards that he should have won and that Best Mate would stay the Gold Cup trip……..well, I never ignore advise like that from the greatest jockey and backed him the next day at about 11’s and cheered him home when he won. I also enjoyed the third win of Best Mate with the wonderful atmosphere at Cheltenham.
Spot thedifference’s recent win was a joy to watch and I also thought that Istabraq’s final Champion hurdle win was something special. There are many others but I must mention the enjoyment I felt when one of my favorite horses named Katarino came back from a long term injury and won the Fox Hunters at Aintree

If only that final sentence referred to GG and not Zafonic….

Doyley
Tell me about it!
I had been backing Toby Tobias, like the certainty he looked, for weeks before that race. Anyone who thinks jockeys don’t make a difference ought to be made sit and watch that race until they’d changed their minds. For me, it has to be Nijinsky’s St Leger. Went there with no intention of having a bet, but just to sit and watch history in the making. The result was never in any doubt, and the reception for 2 great champions (Lester the other) was so incredibly moving I still savour it to this day.
December 5, 2007 at 20:30 #129007For me it has to be Desert Orchid’s Gold Cup, just amazing and everytime i watch it i feel the same way i did when i first saw it.
Some others include Moscow Flyer’s second Queen Mother win, Best Mate’s third Gold Cup, Amberleigh House and Numbersixvalverde winning their Grand Nationals (lost my voice on both occasions!), Authorized’s Derby win seeing that i was there at the time and am a HUGE Frankie fan!
Giants Causeway and Kalanisi fighting it out in the Juddmonte, Secretariat’s Belmont, and last but not least Bandari’s win in the Lingfield derby trial…the race that got me hooked in the first place and probably the reason i’m where i am now.December 5, 2007 at 20:41 #129010Hi again, forgot to mention Dancing Brave’s Arc, another Machine in his day, Trained by the master and ridden by another master.
Whilst on the Pat Eddery theme Silver Patriarch’s Leger was sterling stuff as well, as was See More Business in the Gold Cup, the race for me that confirmed Paul Nicholls’s arrival as a serious Trainer, fully vindicated with what has followed.
Some good memories from all who have replied, and i’m sure i will have some more.
Cheers for now.
December 5, 2007 at 20:42 #129011How on earth did Nortons Coin ever win a Gold Cup?
Dessie’s Gold Cup day takes some beating. It wasn’t just that the great horse won it was the weather – would he run, wouldn’t he? Amazing day.
Royal Gait winning the Champion Hurdle. I saw him win at Nottingham then went round telling everyone I could find that he would win the Champion Hurdle so it was really special that he did. Such a shame he died the following season.
On the flat I’m still waiting for something that makes me go "Oh my god, what the hell is that?". Nearest I’ve seen was Arazi in the US but he never trained on.
December 5, 2007 at 21:01 #129014Two minute brainstorm:
Dancing Brave’s (parallel universe) Derby victory in 1986
Any Dancing Brave
Any Zilzal
Sir Percy’s Derby
Sir Percy’s Dewhurst
Peintre Celebre’s Arc
Dance Machine’s Sweet Solera in 1986; (the fastest I have ever seen a horse travel; you have to see it to believe it. Made Arazi’s BC Juvenile look like a mare’s bumper)
Ghostzapper’s Breeders Cup
Any Chakalak
Any Bayin
Any Desert Orchid
Flakey Dove’s Champion Hurdle.
Make A Stand’s Champion Hurdle – astonishing (and sniffily ignored by the twiggy purists because of the trainer)
Baron Ferdinand and Everglades, Magnet Day,York in 1995; (ah…the days when Roger Charlton was the real deal gambling stable).*sigh*. Memories
December 5, 2007 at 21:51 #129019Best Mate’s 2nd/3rd Gold Cups
Moscow v Azerty v Well Chief – Tingle CreekDecember 5, 2007 at 22:55 #129038Special Cargo vs Lettoch vs Diamond Edge, 1984 Whitbread Gold Cup.

December 6, 2007 at 07:10 #129066I’m hopeless at remembering or even knowing race names so this will be very vague.
Desert Orchid’s Gold Cup win, all of Red Rum’s Nationals, Burrough Hill Lad’s Gold Cup win because I’d followed him from nothing to where he ended up.
Marlborough winning the Racing Post Chase, Earthmover winning whatever race it was at Cheltenham a couple of years ago, Beef or Salmon coming from nowhere to win that big race in Ireland last season that the Listener was supposed to win! (Sorry I said I’d be vague!). Spot Thedifference winning anything.
Hardy Eustace’s recent win when you think he’s possibly had his day.
Frankie’s 7 timer at Ascot. I’ve got the DVD and it’s a tearjerker every time.
Taj’s win, which I only heard rather than watched because I was hiding in the kitchen!
There are so many more, there’s a lump in my throat most days.
December 6, 2007 at 08:24 #129070For sheer brilliance – Dubia Millenium’s Prince of Wales Stakes win awesome.
THe one thing that i will probably remember in racing for long as i live and one of the enduring images is Vinne Keane after he fell from Latalomne at the second last in the Champion Chase for the second time, then proceeding to throw himself onto the ground – i did feel sorry for him that day but every time i see it now it does bring a smile to my face
