On my recent summer trip around some racecourses I’d not visited before, I remain dismayed by the quality/atmosphere of so many racecourse bars and eateries. Not only attending the races for the racing and I’m sure loving food and drink as much as I do at the races, do posters have any secrets they’d like to share about value-for-money food/drinking experiences at the races?

Summer – a barbeque and beers on the Centre Course area at Perth was fantastic with huge area for kids to run around

Winter – cannot beat Rosie’s Bistro at Kelso on a quieter midweek fixture for lunch

Sorry but Newcastle’s catering for the ordinary punter I found grim, with soul-less restaurants in need of some refurbishment

The seafood bar at Sandown is a good place to plot up, used to be call Wheeler’s, pretty much opposite the winning line. That’s where I go anyway and would recommend it as a place to use as a base for a days racing there.

Perth’s fish and chips are as good as any I’ve had on a racecourse.

The pies at Kelso are excellent. The bar/cafe in the old stand is a gem of a place to take bit to eat or a drink, particularly in winter when the roaring fire is on the go. Quick access to the roof top as well for one of the best views in British racing.

I’ve blown the trumpet a few times for the Rosebery Cafe at Musselburgh. An excellent cup of coffee and very tasty selection of sandwiches and cakes. Just inside the members/hospitality entrance, it gets busy at jump meetings but can be quiet during the flat season.
