So many for so many reasons.
The horse that got me into racing: Red Rum (who else)
My first bet: Apple Peel.
My first winning bet: Hit The Deck.
My first winning bet that wasn’t odds on: Money To Spare.
My first winning bet where I actually beat the SP: Lucius.
The horse that secured a Tote Jackpot for me: Tree Poppy.
Best Flat horse I ever saw live: Frankel.
Best Jumps horse I ever saw live: Sprinter Sacre except he pulled up that day so Night Nurse instead.
Current favourite horse (aka the last winner I backed): Apple Rock partnered by “Super, super Kev, super, Super Kev, super, Super Kev, super Kev the Brogster!”

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"January 14, 2021 at 09:16 #1517517Amazing you would remember your first bet Ian. I started betting at the age of eight and had my account compromised rather than closed ( it was drawn up in my father’s name ) at nine years old. He was gobsmacked but couldn’t really tell anyone about my 39 successive winning conditional bets that were just too much for McLaughlin’s the postal bookies and they drafted in new rules. This did not stop me winning as I changed to straight win betting, but there were no more streaks, but I was able to identify big priced winners and I would rather not say how as it would be scoffed at. School work was drab in comparison and luckily having a photographic memory helped me get by with little work but I remember a period of months when I was caned every day by a religious man.
The Grand National was what motivated me to get deep into racing and the whole of March was spent thinking about it and peaked on hearing Tony O’ Heirs voice take up the race on the far side. Red Rum changed my father’s life and cemented my love of horseracing. Al Bahathri was a favourite later on and can remember Jimmy Linleys bright red excited plum face when she came ever so late to win – which was her style. Zilzal the miler and sprinter Orajoya were other favourites. The battling Viking Flagship was a horse I greatly admired and Dancing Brave was such a thrill to watch and I had a sort of love affair with Barracuda.
January 16, 2021 at 15:03 #1517863So many but here’s my favs
St Nicholas abbey. Just a gorgeous looking horse. Thought he had gone when he flopped in the Guineas but his comeback win at Chester was fantastic. Unforgettable wins in Dubai and of course the breeders cup besoming the first father and son to win.
Sea pigeon. Loved this dual purpose legend. His champion hurdle win still gives me goosebumps when he finally beat monks field.
Dessie. His gold cup win is legendary but his Irish National win was incredible. The most exhilarating of jumpers.
Soba. Worked her way through the ranks and was at York when beaten by habibti. Still collected a tidy sum ew.
Alleged. Saw him win the voltigeur and beat hot grove by ten lengths. Two amazing wins in the arc. Had loads of training issues so his success was even more amazing.
Sagaro. Fabulous stayer. His win in the gold cup with lester motionless just pure poetry.
So many others but could be here all day.
