Many of you will remember the prolific pointer/hunter chaser Flying Ace from the Eighties. He won 59 times, although only 23 came under rules.
"Only" 23, hahahaha! He was the closest thing to perpetual motion in northern / Scottish points for years. All credit to the Calders for keeping him going for so long.
How Just Beth keeps her form up in spite of a creeping mark and one heartbreak after another is a thing of wonder. How many other animals are there out there running off a mark 28lb higher than their last one without winning any of their last 22 starts?
Character-wise, I’ve grown very fond of Bill Haze this winter, and he continues to put up sterling efforts in hunter chases over all distances – despite giving every outward impression he’d sooner kill you, your family and all your mates.

April 12, 2006 at 19:25 #71238Double Silk for me. Probably the best jumper of a fence I have ever seen and he even managed to excel with the handicap of Mr Ron Treloggan on his back. Won a couple of Foxhunters at Cheltenham where he was foot perfect and particularly remember the first of those where he seemed to gain a length at every fence. Ironically fell in the National when nearly favourite – not bad for a Hunter Chaser.
Also fond memories of Dizzy, Hever Golf Rose, Lochsong and more recently Librettist. Hope we’ll see him again but somehow I doubt it now as he has suffered leg problems but he would’ve been top-class!
April 12, 2006 at 23:56 #71239I was a big Dizzy fan (in fact most of the Monteith family horses like Beldine and Moment of Truth were favourites) and I backed her when she won a thrilling County Hurdle and I’m delighted she has a bar named after her at Musselburgh.
I was another heartbroken when Ekbalco broke a shoulder when challenging at the second last in the Fighting Fifth won by Gaye Brief. He was a really exciting hurdler and actually started joint favourite for the Champion Hurdle which Mercy Rimell’s horse won.
April 13, 2006 at 05:11 #71240
Going back to my original thread, Burroughhill has mentioned two of her present favourites, Coolfore Jade and Ateen. I follow racing avidly, yet I struggle to place these horses in my mind, probably like The Castilian for many people.
You probably wouldn’t notice these two. They’re regulars every week on the all-weather, and I always cheer them on, although I haven’t seen Coolfore Jade for a while.
Another I was trying to remember the name of, and just have is Lanzarote. He was another that was killed in action. Lovely horse.
April 14, 2006 at 14:54 #71241Great thred.
My favourite horse is Soeur Fontenail. She is a Plumpton specialist who always runs her heart out.She is running there on Monday so watch out for her.
Also love Pretty Star.Handsome boy who is a bit of a monkey !!!!
I remember Dom Samurai… a tiny horse who could jump a mountain .On his good days he was brilliant.
April 14, 2006 at 15:55 #71242What about Walter’s Destiny at Wincanton yesterday.
!4 years of age, hardly ever misses a Wincanton meeting ( having run there over 30 times ), and runs a storming race to finish third. I wish I had his courage!
The Castilian is engaged at Plumpton on Monday. Would make my day if he ran.
April 14, 2006 at 19:45 #71243In the same race as Soeur Fontenail.Let’s hope they both come home safely.
April 14, 2006 at 21:26 #71244If they both jump the last hurdle together Nina, my lad will happily wave your favourite on, he’s very charitable!!!!
April 14, 2006 at 22:06 #71245Sal and reet hard, I’m sure you’re both right. I wonder was Raffindale with Ryan Price, Sal?
Bill Marshall… all these old names… Jack Jarvis, Humphrey Cotterill, Harvey Leader. Wonderful.
Also certain owners seemed to specialise in good sprinters. Corbett is a name I remember. I think I still see it, or saw it recently in my "senior"-type memory.
I remember now, Sal, the dam of the horse I was trying to remember was Wharfdale – so that would fit with Raffindale.

The Castilian isn’t running but Soeur Fontenail is. I’ll be shouting for it!!!
January 5, 2021 at 14:39 #1516492I found this quite interesting back from 2006 – Daylight mentions Cab on Target who was a serial winner. A bit of old art this one just look at the blank screen to wipe the present and take the red and yellow pill to time travel back to enjoy the full flight first class ⬛…..💊

January 6, 2021 at 19:21 #1516654I’ll stick with 5
Grey Abbey
One of the owners was my uncle’s sister , they bought him for 8k and he was everything I love in a horse , one of the best jumpers of the fence I ever saw , big and bold from the front , he won me a load of money and I was there in the pissing rain when he won the Scot nat off top weight , his last win in the aintree bowl with Graham lee standing up before the line and pointing to him us one of my fav racing moments …it was profitable to
Native River …as above , big bold front runner , sim to abbey as he won the welsh nat off top weight and then onto GC glory , I spent months argueing with my brother as he was adamant he couldk GC …he could and did , he,s also come back from 2 setbacks to remain a top class chaser ….he could yet win a Nat if they,ll have a go
Lord Windermere , backed him when he won the RSA and then spent a year backing him for the GC , as I said in a prev post I just he was going to win the GC that day , I shouted myself hoarse and then ran to the bookies …one of the best pickups I’ve had , I told plenty people all he needed was good ground and a hill …everything that year hada question mark against them
Rhyme and Reason …..his national was my first every winning bet , picked himself up off the ground to win …..my dad was on Durham Edition ….he,sjust about over it …as long as I don’t mention it
Yorkhill , a proper nutter of a horse nursed back to form by a shrewd trainer , I really hope he goes to Cheltenham as he deserves to still dine at the top table …..the fact he won at 66-1 to get me a e.w lucky15 in also gets him on the list
January 6, 2021 at 20:43 #1516662At 14 years of age I was mesmerized by Grundy.I thought he was a beautiful looking horse; taught me how to appreciate a real chestnut
The NH horses of the seventies/ early eighties who not only raced regularly but against each other. Sea Pigeon was my particular favourite but that’s not to forget Night Nurse and Birds Nest and the other hurdlers from that era.
Wayward Lad another favourite; IMO the best chaser not to win the Gold Cup.
One sees so little of today’s stars, how many times has the dual gold cup winner appeared in two seasons , it’s difficult to build up the affection and interest of yesteryear.
January 7, 2021 at 01:44 #1516681After Captain Christy, Pendil, and Night Nurse, I thought I’d never fall in love again, but Faugheen and Annie Power were electric. As Huddles suggested, we don’t see enough of the top horses now; the Festival has devoured everything

Remember Douze Douze? The big French horse that was runner up to best mate in the Peterborough while giving his jockey niughtmares.
He finally got his was and unshipped Gicquel at Ascot and then ran off into the distance while jumping the fences for fun.
I though that, if they could superglue a jockey to him, he’d have won some big prizes.
He never ran in the UK again, but won a couple of small races at Auteuil.
He hasn’t run since 2004, does anyone know what happened with him?
If he’s still around, he’s only 10yo.
Appreciate that replying to a post made nearly 15 years ago is something of a waste of time, but I saw him win the champion 4yo chase at Auteuil with one of the most extraordinary performances I have seen – in front and well clear the entire race, never looking like being challenged by another horse, whilst running down every fence sharply to the right and giving away vast amounts of ground. Regrettably Macaire concluded from this performance that what he needed was a right-handed track, and sent him to Huntingdon, Kempton and Ascot, where his inability to either measure the fence or veer to his right meant that he was either going to hit the fence or the wing of it. Three defeats followed and that was the last we saw of him over here. He would have been a superstar around Newbury or Haydock.
