Thast just typical BBC racing coverage, they overtry to appeal to an audience that has no interest in racing. (Better on telly than not though). The downside is that they barely ever mention (or even take notice of) horses at bigger prices that 10-1, and if a horse wins at bigger than tens (like finsceal beo in france last year) then the race will be over by the time jim mcgrath realises what horse is winning by 5 lengths.<br>I havent seen it this year but usually I imagine myself kicking james sherwood stupid, he’s a pompous git and blatantly has no interest in racing whatsoever, just slagging off people who have paid for a day out to see some of the best racing around for showing too much skin…

James Sherwood is superb at what he has been employed to do. Sadly I cannot say the same regarding various other members of the BBC team – Cochrane, Persad, Carson etc

    James Sherwood is total quality.

A couple of years ago, he was standing by a tall, somewhat orange lady of a certain age.  He gave her a leering sideways look and announced: "And that would look absolutely perfect on someone a little younger".

    A comic genius.

I think that someone doing a parody of sherwood (like a tim westwood/ ali g thing) would have comic potential but its the fact that the bloke is just a genuinely arrogant disillusioned upper class rentboy, and the bbc team talk to him like hes master splinter (i suppose he does like him).<br> <br>That only serves to maximise his punchability….

Royal Ascots never going to be the same for me, unless they get Mrs Charlie Brookes – as I believe she is now – back on the mike, lacing into the attire of her sisters under the skin, with great gusto. Hilarious stuff.

I’ve been doing a bit of voluntary work this afternoon for the Riding For The Disabled so I missed Ascot.<br>Would have loved to have turned up and asked the Queen and company if it was ok to attend, dressed in my attire (shirt including RDA logo, jeans and wellies).

Radio Five Live wasn’t a lot better – some hyperactive airhead (presumably their fashion ‘expert’) had managed to get hold of Nigel Havers and conducted the following ‘interview’:

"Well Nigel, I hear that you’re presenting the trophy for one of the races this afternoon"<br>"Yes, that’s right"<br>"Come on then, give us a tip!!"<br>"I don’t really know, its a handicap, far too difficult"<br>"Come on!"<br>"Well, Leg Spinner seems to have a chance"<br>"Wow!! What a great name!! If you had a horse Nigel, what would you call it?"<br>"No idea, possibly Chariots Of Fire"<br>"Wow"…(pause)….."Why?"

Since when have you been qualified to comment on fashion HJ?

For those of us in employment who have to record the racing I strongly recommend Sky+ which among its many excellent features allows you to fast forward through the fashion coverage at 30x normal speed.

I was unfortunately exposed to the first piece of this guff, however, and was amused to hear the male personage talking about the importance of "black and white" this week. Took me back to the days of Julian Wilson saying – year in and year out, as I recall – to Eve Pollard: "…the Cecil Beaton black and white motif appears to be in vogue this year."

Admit it, you’ve always been jealous.

I didnt see much of him but he came across as a right horrible little snot.

If you had seen a lot of him, I doubt you would have changed your opinion.

The one thing that made me laugh is when Sherwood and that woman appeared and Rishi was interviewing them.

    I thought:

"Hey Rishi, all your racing colleagues are with other racing people talking about racing … and there you are away from the action talking to a bitchy little ‘mo and a bimbo about clothes … what does that say about your ability as a racing pundit?"

Personally, I think that, if they want to have a gayboy bitching about people’s clothes, couldn’t they get Marc from Ugly Betty?

    He’s a lot funnier.

(yes, I know he’s not a real person)

Finally, what is it about racing that makes TV producers think "this isn’t interesting enough on its own, we need to create sideshows"

You don’t get that in football or even formula 1 (zzz).

    What’s the deal?

Is the average viewer not interested in form analysis … or are the presenters too stupid or ignorant to talk about the races in captivating way?

Have to agree Steve. I was bitterly disappointed that I hadn’t managed to get the week off work until I saw the BBC trailer: ‘A Week of Racing and Fashion’. As though the fashion was of equal importance.

Is Willy Carson there this week?
