Sad to see Farouk d’Alene recorded as having died on 7 February 2026 aged 11 according to the BHA database. He was a talented but unlucky horse, and I didn’t want his passing to go unremarked.
He made a bright start for Gordon Elliott including winning at Grade 2 level in both novice hurdles and novice chases. Things started to go wrong for him when he was running a big race in the Brown Advisory at the Festival in 2022, but fell at the second last. He was staying on well at the time and may have given the winner, L’Homme Presse, a serious challenge.
It was another 18 months before he reappeared, and he was returned to action in the very competitive environment of the Troytown Chase, only to fall at the first. The only form of note he showed after this was second place in a Pertemps Hurdle Qualifier at Leopardstown, and the final three races of his career involved him being pulled up in a series of ferociously competitive handicap chases including the 2024 Grand National.
It appears he had moved to Faye Bramley most recently according to the Racing Post database, but never ran for her.
RIP Farouk d’Alene
