What’s not to like about Tanya Stephenson?
Clever, committed, articulate, sharp, a punter and bred from solid horse/dog racing stock. She’ll do me on the team. The lass gets a real pasting on here and I can never see why.
Dave Compton needs a high profile job and he’s the most underrated in the field. Francome and Weaver can do the paddock.
I can’t split Holt and McGrath; they can share commentary. Establishment insiders Scott, Down and Claire Balding can do irregular features about trainers and that.
A weekly "Alas Smith and Jones" style table-top chinwag involving the likes of Julian Wilson, the fiesty Lydia, John McCirick, James W, SMP, Barney C, Clement Freud, Peter Savill, Richard Phillips and John McCracken would feature regularly in my TV fantasy show.
BTW, I know most of this slagging is just lighthearted pub talk, but we really are blessed with decent TV coverage over here. Check Stateside on 415 for a comparison.;)

January 5, 2007 at 16:25 #35222We british like a good moan though!! Thats why our coverage is better cos we’re never happy!
January 5, 2007 at 16:51 #35223Presenter: Nick Luck, Lydia Hislop
Pundit: Steve Mellish, James Willoughby (Flat)
Jonathan Neesom, Eddie Fremantle (NH)
Paddock: Ken Pitterson
Commentator: Richard Hoiles, Mark Johnson
January 5, 2007 at 18:01 #35224Tanya is getting some very unfair criticism IMO. I like her.
Clare Balding – superb.
Simon Hoult – Best commentator there is.
Get rid of both Jim McGrath’s. The Timeform one who seemingly makes a mint from betting can barely ever pick a winner on TV, usually goes along with the favourite.
The commentaor one – deary, deary me, he is absolutely dreadful.

January 5, 2007 at 18:35 #35226Dave Duggan is the best all round horse man on T.V. He tells it as it is, met him at cheltenham last year and trust me he has serious info on all the top irish yards and he doesnt hold back on telling the viewing public.
January 5, 2007 at 19:13 #35227Presenter: Clare Balding and Nick Luck
Commentator: Mike Cattermole (although I’d like him as a presenter too)
Analysis: Lydia Hislop
My, I’m like a kid in a sweet shop picking these…
January 5, 2007 at 19:52 #35228Steve Mellish and Graham Cunningham get the thumbs up from me, their ability to analyse a race properly (not the usual Harvey/Emily Jones bulls**t
of winner improved, second ran well, third gave it’s running) after watching it once is diferent class.Nick Luck would be the one I’d want to ask the questions to allow the analysts to show what they know.
Though having said that, I usually have the tv muted between races. Commontator I like best is John Hunt. Though Lee McKenzie has provided two or three of my favourite comms, those being sounding like he’s being strangled when calling Measured Tempo at Newmarket, at Bath last year Rill, Arbella, can’t call it yet RRRRRRRRIIIIIIIIIILLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL’ and at Windsor this year with Sunovergun.
January 5, 2007 at 20:00 #35229Royal Ascot Dream team…
Commentator…Thommo…."er….and there’s 27 in line approaching the last furlong" (useful for the Wokingham).
Fashion expert…Bet Large (a.k.a. Mike Suffield)…knows a thing or two about hats
Draw analyst…Chompy Draw Boy…"**** Royal Ascot there’s a 5f 0-70 at Ripon tonight with a high bias"
Totty Spotter…Dave Nevison…one of the best
January 5, 2007 at 20:20 #35230May I point everyone in the direction of the contribution by Drone. This is the definitive list. Steve Mellish is the benchmark against which all other pundits should be measured, and as such shows what a shambling bunch of amateurs are currently foisted upon the terrestrial and ATR viewers.
January 5, 2007 at 20:27 #35231Wot! No mention of Jimmy Lindley, Richard Pitman or Peter Scudamore ?:o
January 5, 2007 at 20:35 #35232Presenter…Clare Balding, maybe Nick Luck on her days off
Paddock….Jason Weaver
Pundit….James Willoughby; I could listen to him for hours
Commentator…….Richard Hoiles: never misses a trick and can pronounce the name of every racehorse in the World.
Booth (if there is one) ……Sean Boyce
Analysis……can’t stand her presenting style but you have to admire her knowledge: Lydia Hislop
January 5, 2007 at 20:39 #35233Claire Balding, Lydia Hislop, James Willoughby, John Francome and Mike Cattermole for the polished smoothness.
Holt or Hoiles for commentator – marginally Holt but either would do.
I can’t abide Nick Luck, Alistair Down or any betting pundits.
January 5, 2007 at 20:50 #35234I really cannot understand why people dislike Luck. He puts in the same preparation whether he’s at Musselburgh on a blustery Wednesday in December that he does if he’s at York for the Juddmonte International.
If people want to dislike someone that talks posh, step forward Paul ‘Ya’ Morrison that seems to get the Northern gigs that no-one else wants and presumably gets them at short notice because all he’s capable of doing is rehasing whatever is in the Racing Post.

You are not very clued in if u believe that clown duggan has inside info on any top yards. He has first class honours in the art of bluffing. The so called inside info that u allude that he has in abundance was to tell the congregation at a Cheltenham preview that despite the welter weight of money for Dun Doire for the WIll Hill Chase, he was a non runner. Or maybe he had such an inside track that he was trying to put punters and bookies alike off the scent to get a bigger price for Harvey:o
Getting back to the dream team of presenters – basically just watch Racing Uk and you have the ultimate dream team. Turf out some dead wood and jokers such as the pathetic Tom O’Ryan and Ken Pitterson (what insights btw does his new column in the weekender provide??) and get John Hunt and Mark Johnston from ATR to support Languid on the commentary.
RUK is the thinking man’s station. I enjoy listening to Mellish and Hyslop or Hoylesey or Jonathan Neesom. Willoughby is enjoyable also if ur not taking the racing too seriously but when he goes off on tangents with Mc Nae there is too much rubbish.
Whereas the bulk of ATR, C4 and Beeb deserve the mute button.
January 5, 2007 at 21:01 #35236I don’t like Luck because of how he speaks (he doesn’t sound that posh)…I don’t like his eyes or face. There’s just something about him which creeps me out.

At least you object to him for the right reasons. I’m sorry but if that is the best you can come up with against the bloke I’m afraid it’s a bit pathetic.
