It’s all well and good having the music after racing if it encourages new people to attend and maybe get interested in the sport. The problem though is that people who just want to attend for the racing are alienated as the cost is so high. Not many are going to pay £30 for a very mediocre card.

Betfair Hollywood Park has the right idea, I think.

$10 seems like a more reasonable price.May 29, 2012 at 11:16 #405903The farce after the electrical problems was enough for me.
If someone got electricuted in your house Mark, would you blame yourself or the electrician? More’s to the point, how would you react if other people blamed you?

This should be seen as a cheap concert with racing thrown in, NOT an expensive day’s "mediocre" racing with a concert afterwards.
Racing enthusiasts should just forget the day exists, it’s not put on for them. Plenty of other days at Newbury they can go to. Don’t see why it "alienates" anyone.
Value Is EverythingMay 29, 2012 at 11:47 #405907Every time I go midweek there is one grandstand entry gate (of three) open and just one of the turnstiles in operation. The other one is manned but the computer invariably needs re-booting and we are told it`s closed. Had a long delay delay getting in for the `winter festival` due to this. Experienced the same thing last Friday but as the meeting was so pitiful there was no queue. Have not experienced this at any other course. It should be a very good course but it seems very poorly run.Anyone who travels a fair way to see racing there comes way down the priorities
Agree Pilgarlic, Newbury do have to look at the little things that might put off racegoers (like turnstyles). Scanners they use for checking tickets/cards often fail. My card got rejected and had to go to the office where they checked my details and issued with a new one.
Value Is EverythingMay 29, 2012 at 20:44 #405966Tomorrow at Sandown is totally free thanks to Racing Uk club day …its a nice touch and a good card
Hats off to Kempton on Monday ….free parking , 16 quid in , less a fiver for my diamond badge (over 60 , it costs 10 quid ) 11 quid , a good card and a lovely day (applicable to Kempton , Sandown and Epsom )
Now why cant Newbury and other courses become more appealing for entry prices ……..if you make it reasonable , lots of old duffers like myself will attend

May 29, 2012 at 21:00 #405969The economics aren’t difficult – to get the likes of Tom Jones, Madness or even Calvin Harris requires a big outlay by the course and they have to cover their costs.
Not unreasonably they would argue that if you want to a concert venue to see any of the aforementioned, you’d be looking at £25 and all points upwards.
The truth is that this reinforces the view that the evenings are essentially a concert with some racing thrown in.
