I’ve just returned from another of my overseas weekend journeys. This time, it was to the tiny course of Saarbruecken on the French/German border to watch our new horse, Falco, run in a race over 1 1/2 miles. As usual, I’d informed my friends and family with words to such effect:
‘Our new horse, Falco, runs at Saarbruecken on the French/German border on Sunday afternoon. I’ll let you all know how he does’.
Unfortunately, he didn’t really handle the track (only five furlongs round!!), and although he lead going into the final turn, he ran wide and was beaten by a horse still a maiden after 18 races ridden by a 61 year old Chuckle Brothers lookalike!! Yes, it’s star quality all the way at Saarbruecken!! Anyway, I was in the bar after the race with Christian and syndicate head Gerd, when suddently, my mobile started going crazy:
‘Well Done Darren – Fantastic result’.
‘That race must have been worth half a million Euros! Great – see you in Florida!’
‘Brilliant! And you even beat that Dettori bloke! Well Done!’
I think you all know where this is going!! Yep, my friends and family (most of whom don’t know a lot about racing) had checked the internet/Ceefax for any information, and found that ‘Falco wins the French 2,000 Guineas’. Added to the fact I’d said that Saarbruecken is on the French border, the words ‘Horseracing’, ‘French’ and ‘Falco’ were put together in various orders, and suddently, I became the owner of a Classic winner without actually knowing it!!
Most of the rest of the day was taken up sending texts along the line of ‘Sorry to disappoint you, but I really can’t buy you a Ferrari’ etc. So, what’s in a name eh? Two horses called Falco – one wins the French 2000 Guineas – the other wins 500 Euros!!!

Amazin story – Were you aware that Falco was running in the Guineas? (Not your falco obviously!)
May 12, 2008 at 21:08 #163068It was only on Saturday night when I was looking at the runners at Longchamp that I noticed that the other Falco was running in France, and I thought ‘Ah – that might confuse some people’. Looking at some congratulatory texts I received, I think it did!!
