Maybe not as good as some years but thought it deserved a thread.

Even though it is only a Grade 3 the opener is as interesting as any race. Unfortunately, with so many relative unknown quantities it is a definite no bet race. The market appears to support that view. Landofhopeandglory has done nothing wrong but I am always wary of how long these converted Flat horses will continue to enjoy the tougher code. These days I am not sure if Geraghty is that much of a plus over Walsh.

There have been stronger editions of the Royal Bond but several could take a step forward. Peace News will need to win well to justify his lofty position in the Supreme market.

It really should be another for Vroum Vroum Mag. The only concern would be that she isn’t shorter in the market. It is first time but the opposition is hardly frightening. It seems a strange decision to bounce Apple’s Jade out so quickly. For whatever reason she doesn’t look the same horse this season (she was cat like at her obstacles but this season has just been lethargic) and I doubt there will be any improvement for the step up in trip.

I was hoping to watch Ice Cold Soul in the handicap hurdle but he has been taken out.

THM put in a good word for Anibale Fly and he is probably the one to beat. I used to think he was a little iffy over hurdles but that might have had something to do with the way he was being ridden. Nothing wrong with his last two starts although Martello Tower hasn’t really progressed from his Albert Bartlett success. The extra half mile should suit and several of these look as though they might want a stiffer test of stamina.

The handicap chase looks an ordinary race for the money but the card closes with what looks a reasonable bumper. All the ex-pointers looked staying types in that sphere so it will interesting to see which of them copes best with this test.

2 bets for me today guys.

In the 1410 I like St Stephens Green @ 9’s. It’s a competitive enough race, and even though he has to step up, he doesn’t have to step up that much, and was worth a chance at the price.

He’s let me down the last twice by falling, but Captain Von Trappe is the bet in the 1510 at 8’s. No way he would have beaten Empire of Dirt last week, but I’m confident he would have nicked a place, and I was gutted when he came down, as I had a big bet on him. I think he’s miles ahead of the handicapper, and I’ve (stupidly?) gone in again.

No bets in the rest, but some very decent horses on show.

    1310 – I’d be between Labaik & Penhill

1340 – Quite simply, I want Vroum Vroum Mag to win this well. She’s my main bet in Champion Hurdle, as I’ve always had a hunch this the route she’d go. I just have the suspicion, that all is not well with the big 2, and if that is the case, I’d make her favourite for The Champion Hurdle. This is by far her biggest test so far though.

1410 – Anibale Fly all the way in this for me.

1540 – If any winners today, I’d maybe chance Imperial Way each way at the 12’s, 14’s.

I’ve gone for Airlie Beach in the novice hurdle at 13:10. Think she is overpriced at 9/1.
Apples Jade in the 13:40 for me. I think 2m4f will do her good.

Thanks guys. Great start for me with Airlie Beach en Apples Jade. Very game performance by Apples Jade. Vroum Vroum Mag came very strongly, but Apples Jade fought back!

Canny move by Elliot who was probably counting on that fitness edge being just enough

Sempre Medici and Ainslie in the 14:10 handicap. Sempre Medici is top weight, but I think he can be good enough in this field. Ainslie ran a very good race at Cheltenham two months ago.

Apple’s Jade was much better today but she didn’t win because of any fitness advantage or step up in trip. She won primarily because of a very poor ride from Walsh on the favourite. I can only assume the way she was ridden that connections were not overly bothered about losing today. She was always in a poor position in a slowly run race. Yes, she has a change of pace but she is essentially a stayer. She was asked to quicken twice and it was no surprise that she couldn’t sustain the run.

It was a similar story in the Drinmore. I am pretty sure that again the better horse has finished second. So yet another nasty whiff in the air surrounding McManus runners with a ‘surprising’ gamble on the winner and the second, never close enough to land a proper blow, finishing with what I believe to be a nice bit of petrol left in the tank.

You were a bit unlucky with Captain Von Trappe, Venture to Cognac. He was cruising along until that mistake at the second-last.

Vroum Vroum ridden in a very similar way to at Cheltenham, Stilvi. Recent form seems to suggest she only front runs when racing at 2m. Usually mid-div or held up when racing over this trip or further, making use of a fine turn of foot. Maybe she’ll come on for the run, but it was a Grade 1 and Mullins/Walsh were definitely “bothered about losing today”. Though seems to me VVM’s odds over-estimated her chance and Apples Jade’s under-estimated hers -particulrly so when there wasn’t much obvious pace in the race. AJ always races prominently, that and step up in trip likely to help the Gigginstown mare.

Whatever you think of Walsh, he’s a superb jockey. There’s no saying how much energy is ultimately saved by lobbing along in such relaxed fashion. It could easily be a much more efficient way of racing than being up there forcing the pace.

Although Elliot has slagged AJ off, he must have been happy she’d recovered fully from Newcastle. And however VV Mag was ridden AJ would have been pin-sharp fitness-wise and from being in the thick of competition so recently. RP ratings gave VVM 11lbs to find with AJ and AJ’s Topspeed rating was far superior (despite these facts, Spotlight still tipped VVM). The disparity in SPs between the two was surprising.
