Spencer has come in for universal condemnation for a couple of rides on this horse but I cannot say that Murtagh looked anymore in control in the BC. In fact not only was he forced to challenge about 5 wide but the horse initially lugged to the left when put under pressure. Methinks we should be apologising to Spencer and putting a caution mark ( if not the dreaded TF squiggle) alongside Excellent Art.
Am I totally off base?
October 27, 2007 at 22:52 #121758He went 5 wide because he had a no choice – crap draw.
Best turf miler in the world imo, just hasn’t had the chance to prove it in his last 3 runs. Given too much to do in last 2 European runs, and a poor draw tonight to scupper his chance.
Hope they keep him in training next year to prove just how good he really is.
October 28, 2007 at 05:05 #121779Been held up in last or nearly last all the time has been the downfall of probably the most unlucky horse in training, should have another 3 group 1’s under his belt and been talked about in the same breath as Rock of Gibraltor. I can’t see why a horse can’t be held up in 4th or 5th and then make a telling challenge in the last furlong instead of been given way too much to do. ??
October 28, 2007 at 10:11 #121801Don`t make too many excuses for him, these nearly horses usually remain “nearly horses“!
I thought JM gave him a good ride last night, jockey outrode a few to get 2nd place,he was hardly closing at the finish , in fact the pack where closing near the finish!!
Sure he will stay in training next year as he`s not proven enough for a serious stud career, might be worth trying him with blinkers!

I agree with your sentiments about nearly horses and the fact that EA was not really closing at the end. My particular concern is to why he lugged in at the 2 f pole when Murtagh was really trying to get to work on him? I suspect he will remain a nearly horse because he is quirky but accept I am in a minority ( look forward to laying him next year if a decent 3yo comes through!)
October 28, 2007 at 11:19 #121818Always too much credit given to late finishing types
Good example yesterday was Pyro vs War Pass (my only bet of the night
)All the assumptions were that Pyro was "unlucky" and "another 100 yards" and blah blah, last time out. In fact footage didnt really suggest that to me, but anyway….
As much as EA is an exciting horse who will surely win more good races (if he stays in training) he was simply beaten yesterday. Willoghby’s one big ricket of the night was claiming he was a "moral" victor of that race.
Why?
October 28, 2007 at 12:00 #121827Excellent Art will be retired to stud for next season.

Looked to me like he just got slightly unbalanced around the bend, which is obviously very sharp.. remember, he wasn’t ideally suited by Goodwood either (at least IMO) earlier in the year..
Thought he ran a good race myself from a shite draw.. probably would have been ideally suited by better ground as well..
October 28, 2007 at 13:25 #121852twas a very big ask and he gave his all
his all, just wasn’t quite good enough on this occasion, just like in his previous races behind Ramonti
October 28, 2007 at 19:29 #121956Says on racing post that Excellent Art will be going for the Hong Kong mile and then retired. This is ridiculous in my oppionion. Why send a horse like this to stud when he clearly has so much more to give on the race course? They have so many other good horses at Coolmore and i think keeping excellent art in as a 4yo would be brilliant as i can see him being a very good horse next year. Look at Ramonti…rated the best turf miler in the world and he is a 5yo! It really does annoy me why horses are so quickly sent off to stud.
October 28, 2007 at 19:33 #121959im really suprised they are retiring him frankly and a little sad too
It may be that this is not a great miling crop and opposition will be a lot stiffer next year, but as Andy says, its sure not exactly a pressing requirement to get him to stud and surely theres a good chance he can win more decent prizes
he has been labled "unlucky" enough times…so dont connections agree?
October 28, 2007 at 20:23 #121980Coolmore want a son of Pivotal at stud ASAP.
October 28, 2007 at 20:27 #121985Exactly Aidan.. Excellent Art’s value lies in his pedigree.. represents a significant inroad to a highly fashionable sire (that Darley have a large stake in as well)..
Wonder how much he’ll start off at.. wouldn’t be a stallion that I would be particularly attracted to myself.. not an outstanding physical specimen nor does he boast a particularly strong pedigree..
