The two evening meetings tomorrow are at Chelmsford and Kempton.

Both in the South East and both on an artificial surface. In the height of summer.

Take the positives – there’s no AW evening fixture at Lingfield tomorrow.

    One despairs….

At least there is no chance of them encountering ground with “firm” in the going description.

Great clip. None of those horses looked like they were hurt by running on firm ground.

I remember a few of them. That was around about the time I was getting properly interested in racing.

Great front running ride by Pat Eddery. Never in doubt!

Winner looked to have quite a high knee action for the firm ground.

Biennial went on to finish five-lengths third under 9st10lb in the London Gold Cup the following May at Newbury on quick ground.

He later won a 22-runner Windsor novice hurdle by seven lengths also.

I don’t think the dreaded “Firm” at Goodwood did him too much harm.

Those long lost days when Windsor had jumping and novice hurdles had 22 runners.

It is enough to bring a tear to the eye.

If there had been eight runners in one of the big handicaps last week we’d have been hearing all about it.

I was having a look at the 70s and 80s Goodwood cards on the goingbehind.com website and the fields were worse than they are now.

Ps, didn’t Sweeping run last week with Hollie aboard?

I recall when Extel ended their sponsorship, and it became the Leslie & Godwin Spitfire H’Cap….I’m sure one did a fly past on the day of the race.

I may be wrong but I’m sure the Paul Mellon owned, Ian Balding trained Spinning won 2 races at the same festival; Tote Gold Trophy H’Cap, and the Schroeders Glorious Stakes.

As for the original point, AW racing has its place – but it’s not in the middle of a summer evening.

I think Spinning did win twice at Glorious Goodwood. His second win convinced Timeform to remove the dreaded squiggle against his name.

Timeform deserve a squiggle themselves – anyone who follows their souped-up ratings religiously needs a double squiggle.

Firm ground acceptable, 22-runner novice hurdles at Windsor, those were the days!

“As for the original point, AW racing has its place – but it’s not in the middle of a summer evening.”

And tomorrow it is Kempton and Wolverhampton on a sunny August afternoon.

Although I am going to Wolverhampton.

Wolverhampton has picked up fixtures from Bath, deemed unraceable due to Hard ground and very limited watering facilities.

And coming up on Tuesday: 4 Flat fixtures. 3 of the venues are Kempton, Chelmsford and Wolverhampton.

Only Hamilton Park is on that turf thing. Let’s hope they have put plenty of water on it. Can’t have any racing in the height of summer on a fast, natural surface.
