Had a look at this market (BF prices) yesterday and today and have come up with the following (for what it’s worth) on all players < 30.0 on Betfair currently.Cristiano Ronaldo 10.50 (37.04% International SR)
Top class player but too often goes missing on the big stage. Also his SR is not good enough for him to win this. His price is based on his Premiership exploits IMO as opposed to his International ones.Fernando Torres 10.50 (32.61%)
More than capable of scoring but again his SR is not great and he is too short at that price. Premiership bias here again.Miroslav Klose 12.00 (51.35%)
Won the Golden Boot at Germany 2006 with 5 goals, 4 of which were scored in the weak Group section. If the Germans go well, which they are expected to do, he will be there or thereabouts as he looks assured of a starting place.Luca Toni 15.00 (45.45%)
The Italians are not renowned for banging in a hatful of goals at these type of tournaments so he is readily passed over.
David Villa 19.00 (60.00%)
Great strike rate (better than Torres) and at that sort of price he is well worth a bet. Spain also in a group which is relatively weak looking so they should get out of their group but will have a tough quarter-final against a team from the Group of DeathRuud van Nistelrooy 22.00 (50.85%)
Top-class striker but past differences with van Basten have seen him sit out important matches. Also the Dutch had the worst Goal-Difference of all the qualifying teams at +10Mario Gomez 22.00 (66.67%)
Great strike-rate but the stats don’t tell the whole story as the actual figures are 6 goals in 9 caps. His price is too short for a player who is short on experience.Thierry Henry 23.00 (44.90%)
Well known here from his Arsenal days but I have never been impressed with his International stats so he is again passed over.Lukas Podolski 27.00 (54.35)
Superb strike-rate but if Klose and Gomez are the first choice German partnership, he has no chance of getting the goals necessary to win this.Summary
My main bet for this tournament will be on David Villa (20/1 with BetFred), whose price is being held up somewhat by the Premiership bias towards Fernando Torres. I’ll also have small interest bets on Jan Koller (61.18% SR) and Milan Baros (52.54% SR) as I think the Czechs will do OK in this competition and they owe me nothing from the last time.May 21, 2008 at 14:34 #164706i had Baros at 50/1 in the last one so will be backing him again for old times sake
might have a few small bets on Babel- 66/1 Ribery 50/1
not sure who my main bet is yet podolski 18/1 is tempting but not a definate starter we will see
May 21, 2008 at 16:20 #164726David Villa for me aswell, big value at 20/1 i will have to make a trip down to BetFred. cheers David.

May 23, 2008 at 07:26 #164884David Villa seems an excellent bet at those odds.
May 23, 2008 at 15:26 #164960agreed, Vil*a at those prices is a great bet.
I believe that Spain will finally win a major trophy this year and at nearly double the odds of his no-doubt brilliant strike partner, has to be the value.

June 5, 2008 at 14:19 #166570Great summary David.
I think it will be one of the German strikers that finish as the top goalscorers. I really like the priced of Podolski at around 20/1, but I’ve also backed his team-mate Klose.
Germany have three quality strikers and it’s expected that Klose and Gomez will start – but I’m not so sure. If Podolski starts, or comes on as sub and does enough to warrant a start in the next few games, then I think he is cracking value.

June 5, 2008 at 15:16 #166578Can’t say I follow much footy these days, but the Yoyo’s and World Cup are a different matter.
I’ve backed this lot, to ‘interest’ stakes:
Mladen Petric @ 42
Milan Baros @ 100
Ivan Klasnic @ 260No real idea if these selections are any good, but the Czech Republic make plenty of chances, and I think Croatia are an under-rated side (think Petric is the penalty-taker too).

Baros won it 4 years ago i got him at 50/1 (i know how many times do i have to say it but 50/1
) on that occasion so not a bad bet at allJune 5, 2008 at 15:37 #166581I also backed him 4 years ago, batman (how’s that for after-timing) and confess that I might be going with my heart rather than my head this time around.
June 5, 2008 at 15:40 #166584well i am going to do the same again grasshoper along with one or two others i also seen someone had an acumm with all the 1st round games on another post which looked very good but as we know what looks good on paper normally never happens but will have a look myself later as some very good bets if you use your head
June 7, 2008 at 17:36 #167219No chance of Baros winning this. Not even 3rd choice striker.
June 7, 2008 at 18:05 #167226Nice over view David!
Had an interest in Van Nislelrooy and Holland to win.
Now that he is back in favour with something to prove you never know.
Torres also interest me.
Good Luck!
June 8, 2008 at 22:36 #167449Great start for Podolski – you were warned

looking good so far it was a gamble as he wasnt a deff starter but looks sure to keep his place now…….Germany played well and should get to semi’s
i also did Karim Benzema 25/1 looked quality for Lyon and can see him going places after tounament
