Just watched a replay of the above race on the ATR website to see how the horse I’d backed, Glady’s Gal had got on.
As it happens it won with the horse mentioned in the title seemingly having a ‘Hamlet moment’ and failing to leave the stalls.Logging on to my Ladbrokes account I noticed that my winnings based on the BOG of 13/2 was quite a bit down on what I was expecting, checking the Sporting Life website I noticed that there was a 20p deduction due to the said Escape To Glory being ‘Withdrawn’
Can anyone shed any light please or has Big Mac finally got his way and there’s been a rule change that I’ve missed regarding horses not leaving the stalls?
June 11, 2011 at 20:54 #360187Yes there has been a rule change Andrew.
The on-course stewards can now hold an immediate enquiry when a horse is left in the stalls. They’ll take five or 10 minutes looking at the video, and then they’ll decide that the horse didn’t run

Seriously, I’m not sure what the criteria is for determining whether the horse ran or not, but yes, they can do it now.

June 11, 2011 at 22:01 #360203There was an instance about 3 weeks ago where the 2/1 favourite (I think at Yarmouth) was left in the stalls when I believe the gates didn’t open. I only caught a quick glimpse but it looked like the gates were closed. The horse was deemed a runner…
June 12, 2011 at 07:26 #360219Andrew, there has been a recent rule change. However I haven’t watched the race so have no idea if the circumstances of Escape To Glory’s start fit the Post-Race Withdrawal rule.
6. Declaring a Horse a Withdrawal Post – Race
Currently, all horses in the stalls are deemed runners as soon as the Starter starts a race, unless a) a false start is called or b) there is then a void race for whatever reason.
However, from 30th March 2011 in certain Flat start circumstances (e.g. gates do not open but Starter doesn’t see the incident) there will now be provision for the affected horse(s) to be retrospectively classified as a “withdrawal” by the Raceday Stewards. Consequently, bets on such horse(s) which have palpably lost all chance at the start will be fully refunded to punters and Rule 4 will also apply as applicable to winning bets.
NB: this new provision will not apply in cases where:
a) The gates open properly but the horse chooses to, for example, plant at the start, be fractious or take no real part; or
b) The gates open a split second after the rest of the field – an existing protocol will remain in this circumstance.
Jamie Stier, BHA Director of Raceday Operations and Regulation, stated:
“These initiatives are all about further improving flexibility, efficiency and fairness at the start and will hopefully make the start a less stressful situation for horses which are reluctant to load. We’ve consulted widely and the feedback has been really positive throughout.

I can’t see how this rule change would make any difference to horses that are difficult to load. It’s fiddling with the rules for the sake of trying to look busy, a sad failing of our society everywhere nowadays I’m afraid.
