Terribly sad. Virtually in tears watching that.
Grand old horse – we all enjoyed him over many years.
March 5, 2011 at 15:13 #343356Ditto – just came in from doing the gardening to catch up on the racing and this was the first race I saw.
It is a sickener when this happens to any horse let alone the old warriors – his win at Sandown last month was just fantastic….
RIP Erics Charm
March 5, 2011 at 15:20 #343360God bless all his connections, we all have our favourites and he was one of ours. Rest in peace big fella *wipes tear from her eye.

such a tragic lossvf
March 5, 2011 at 15:32 #343362Poor lad, so sad when we lose the veterans we love to see time and time again

I feel so much for his lad/lass and all the connections
March 5, 2011 at 16:16 #343372Condolences to the cnnections and his legions of fans/admirers. Poopular horse and easy to see why. Noble end, I’m sure he died doing what he loved.
March 5, 2011 at 16:26 #343376He was a superb horse – his last win was such a joy to watch and now this … too upset to say any more – RIP Eric you will live on in our memeories.
March 5, 2011 at 20:54 #343407I’m up in Edinburgh, having a lovely weekend with my girlfriend…but this news has put a downer on things for me.
He was my favourite handicap chaser – perhaps my favourite horse -in the world, ever.
Rest easy, big fella. You brought joy to everyone who saw you race.

March 5, 2011 at 20:56 #343408Truly horrific injury; do not want my last memory of him to be what I saw today, so trying to remember Sandown. RIP
March 5, 2011 at 23:38 #17719So awful to see Eric’s Charm injure itself at Newbury and hear that it had to be put down. I have followed the horse ever since his days of running in bumpers, though I never actually got the him right by backing him when he won.
It has been such a bad year for equine fatilities, and is the awful price us jumps fans have to pay to enjoy our sport. Comiserations to all connections and RIP Eric’s Charm.
March 5, 2011 at 23:42 #343430RIP Eric’s Charm.
Very Very Sad.
He was such a gorgeous looking horse. I hardly ever backed him but loved cheering him on at Sandown.
Condolancies to connections and all involved.

It was a horrible landing and awful to see something like that happen to any horse. Eric’s had been round many times with credit. The Karky Schultz fall in the later race was horrible too, if not more sickening at such a lowly obstacle. RIP both of you fine beasts.
March 6, 2011 at 16:21 #343492Been away for the weekend and only just read this terrible news.
Sincere condoloncies to the connections and R.I.P. to the horsesMarch 7, 2011 at 10:19 #343578I am amazed to see only 3 posts on this sad subject. Surely there are not so few soft-hearted ones among the RF community?
My condolences to Erics Charm’s connections, who, I imagine, will always wish with all their hearts that they had retired him after that amazing and unexpected Sandown win, and let that be our last memory of him, rather than the horrible one we are left with.
Condolences too, to Karky Schultz’s connections. He was a talented young horse with a great future.
All horse deaths on the track are sad, whether old campaigner or young star, but some hit you harder than others. That’s the problem with following jumps racing, you get to know and love the horses over several seasons.March 7, 2011 at 13:12 #343599There are a lot more comments on the Memorial section; from what I’ve read on this forum and a couple more forums that I look at, a lot of people are struggling to come to terms with Eric’s death. It has been such a terrible year, the worst I can remember; the awful thing is that I can’t think about him winning at Sandown..I want to, and I hope that, in the future, I shall, but, at this moment in time it just isn’t happening. It would be better not to get so attached to the horses, but that’s well nigh impossible, isn’t it, because they are so amazing and so brave.
March 7, 2011 at 18:17 #343630always had a bet on him when he was running at sandown he always seemed tolove it there.made me feel sick when i saw what happened to the poor bugger.not ashamed to say had tears in my eyes.r.i.p erics charm.
March 7, 2011 at 21:15 #343660I’ve already posted in the memorials section, but there are a couple of things I would like to say.
1) I would love to see the London National renamed after Eric’s Charm. He won the race very impressively, he loved Sandown, and it would just seem right.
2) Eric’s Charm is the only horse I’ve written a song about.
