As FairyBridge has pointed out there is a VIP area by the parade ring – must admit I had not noticed it before.

It is the area before the picket fence.

What I don’t recall seeing before, however, are the temporary steppings that have been built by the parade ring. Then again I am getting old and may not remember them from last year.

For those not in the Queens Stand – here is the controversial winners circle

BTW it is a very hot sunny day here on Epsom Downs

I think the steppings are usually there Paul.

I don’t recall the VIP area before though. I shall be having a good perusal of how that gets used on Saturday and will report back to TRF and to Epsom racecourse if it is not FULL TO THE RAFTERS.

    TRF-watch

Perhaps rather sadly, I have just paced out the parade ring edge the Queens Stand edge was 30 paces, the VIP area 21 and the Duchess Stand area 145 – so the bulk of the parade ring is still for Duchess Enclosure patrons.

There you go – all the information you CANNOT get on the Racing Post at your fingertips here on TRF. :D

    Thanks Paul.

VIP area is well populated this afternoon.

It seems to be for Owners with runners in races other than the current one.

RCA metal badge holders and press.

Paul, have they got big screens where you’ll be able to see the finish of the race from Tattenham straight ?

    Cheers, Lee

    Lee,

There are a large number of big screens all over the place, however without actually walking down to the enclosure I cannot vouch on how well positioned they would be for you.

If I get time after racing I will see if I can find out for you.

EDIT – I have just had a look at my media guide and it looks as though there is a screen opposite your area.

Paul, how did you post and be at Epsom at same time?

Thanks for the photo evidence though, and good photos they are too!

I have to admit that I too did see some people in this VIP area, but not that many to warrant it. Then again, if it is for owners who do not have a horse in that race, then at least it is a worthy cause as owners more often than not do not get much back for their money unless very lucky.

I took a pic of it during first race, when empty and was going to complain as fed up with it but ….. as you say it was used later on.

    Thanks for the feedback Paul,

I’d actually already left and can recommend the Tattenham Straight enclosure to anybody for a real good day out, without costing a fortune. Under 17s go free and just £20 per adult. Take in your own cool box(es) stocked with wine, beers and food et al.

Got there about 11:00 and up until about an hour and half before racing you could pitch yourselves in a rail position – with plenty of other space behind. We were fortunately there early enough to be right opposite the big screen at the 2f marker, right in front of Workforce as he took the race.

What surprised me was that the area never seemed cramped and bookies and the bar were easily accesible, albeit the prices on show wouldn’t have been the best be for my family this day wasn’t about that.

The title of this thread may have credence for other areas of the course but, although entrance to ‘public’ areas was free a while back, £40 for a whole days entertainment for a family was absolutely outstanding value.

    Cheers, Lee

I was really impressed with the Duches Stand, unlike other courses i’ve been to where its everyone chucked into one area, the Duchess Stand you felt more free and had space to move in, the grass used for families and everyone was generaly relaxed.

I tell you what though, has anyone stood at the rail for the Dash? I swear to god it was the most thrilling expierance i’ve had at a racecourse and i stuck my head out it was like 19 Locomotive trains running, the sound! the power! the realness was amazing, also I wouldn’t advise getting too close as my mate got smacked in the eye by some turf nearly nocking him out lol he had a nice black eye in morning aswell!, I dodged a few myself.

I would go back to Epsom for that expierance alone, Derby meeting or not.

I cannot believe that I am reading such drivel about going to the races. Is it any wonder that ordinary punters don’t go to such a snobby place to see horses running.Could I just suggest that you save up and come to Santa Anita and see how the public are treated. Everyone who goes to the races can actially reach out and touch the horses being led into the saddling area!If they so desire(not recommended). Separated by a lax rope. Then watch them being saddled from a viewing area.(10-15 minutes)Then when satisfied go buy a dog and take it to wherever you decide to watch the race from. And that is for 20 dollars for the BC! Seven(7) group one races the same day.

    Andy,

You are not seriously suggesting there is no segregation at the BC are you and that everything is egalitarian?

If you are, could you therefore explain the following, which was in a recent BC press release I received?

    • A variety of seat choices exist, with ticket prices on Championship Friday for Reserved Grandstand and Clubhouse ranging from $20-$75 and on Championship Saturday from $40-$150. There are also bundled two-day packages available for Reserved Grandstand, Clubhouse Box seating and Premium Dining areas (Skye Terrace and Millionaires Row).

That looks like segregated enclosures to me.

Paul that is the price of seats not entry to enclosures. To see saddling you must leave your seats and go to saddling area or sit in your seat and watch like everyone else the large screens. You can get just as good a view of the races by standing along the rails or by bringing your own folding seat and sitting until the races start.Nobody else can use your purchased seat however except yourself.I highly recommend a live experience of Santa Anita in the Autumn when the sun rises over the mountains and the horses are working out. Costs about 10 bucks with a coffee bar.

Mr W and Lee – very pleased to hear you had a good day, bet you are glad you held onto that ticket now Mr W!

I thought the general atmosphere at Epsom was good and upbeat (weather helps of course).
