It’s about 70 miles from Newbury to Epsom Downs.
If you live about halfway along the route and enjoy an evening at the races, you have a dilemma on Thursday.
Two evening meetings 35 miles away from you.
If you live pretty much anywhere else is the country you don’t face such a conundrum.
You’ve got F all anywhere near you.
Who comes up with this nonsense?
Is there anyone at the BHA who could run the proverbial high altitude racecourse that is one of the few remaining bastions of regular fast ground?

They haven’t for some time.
Think there used to be a rule for being 50+ miles apart but if I remember correctly something to do with freedom of courses to do what they want.
Value Is EverythingJune 27, 2022 at 18:36 #1604460Both fixtures will suffer from their proximity to one another while the rest of the country – especially up North – have no evening fixture option.
Many bookmakers will have pitches at both venues too.
It’s a lose-lose for literally everyone.

That is a bit like being asked “Which way up do you want to be crucified?”
June 27, 2022 at 19:25 #1604471It does seem ridiculous. However, Haydock and Chester sometimes race on the same Saturday afternoon and both venues still attract large crowds.
June 27, 2022 at 19:59 #1604476I often used to hear it said they are generally starved of racing in Lancashire, so when there is some on a weekend everyone goes.
I still think these geographical clashes in midweek are bonkers though.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"June 28, 2022 at 00:09 #1604486You could scrap about 400 fixtures from across the annual calendar and still be left with about the same amount of unnecessary fluff/low level garbage.
Racing is its own worst enemy sometimes.
Uttoxeter, Wolverhampton, Doncaster, Chester, Windsor, Pontefract and plenty others like them should be told in no uncertain terms that if they can’t build a sustainable business on around 15-18 meetings a year then they shouldn’t be in business at all.

Excellent gag which may go under-appreciated. Made me laugh anyway.

It was a vicious leg cutter to a hapless No 11 batsman for me – I didn’t get within a foot of getting an edge.
Sorry!
