To be fair, Andrew – you did say there may be a result in this match. I deffo thought it would be a bore draw.
I’m sure you were thinking along the lines of England all out for 51

Taylor bowled bloody well.
Psychologically, Windies have a big advantage now. Be fascinating to see if they can maintain this level of performance.
Bell will be dropped for Shah imho.
Nash has a fighting chance for top bat, not sure KP can be beaten?
What the hell has happened to Cookie? He has gone from knowing exactly where his off stump is to being clueless. Happens to the best batsmen, but still….

Roll on Friday.

February 8, 2009 at 09:28 #208872Should Engalnd fail to win a test out there, will it be called a ‘whitewash’ or a ‘blackwash’?
I recall our 5-0 defeat in the 84′ series between the sides being dubbed this, but would anyone else have thought this was somewhat inappropriate?, or was/is it….o.k.?
Would it have been as acceptable if the English twisted a description of victory so as to make a connection with the colour of skin?
The ‘whitewash’ victory has, and never had, anything to do with the colour of the sportsmen/women that dealt the hiding did it? So why ‘blackwash’?
February 8, 2009 at 14:43 #208888This England team have been in a comfort zone for a long long time. They are long overdue a shake-up. That’s when the real weakness of English cricket smacks you in the face. Where are the replacements? Owais Shah? Fair enough, but he’s been knocking about for 4-5 seasons. Rob Key? Ditto. We have a professional game with 18 teams and 400 full time pros. Where are the replacements?
The next coach is going to have to do what Fletcher did, bypass county cricket and promote players on potential. It’s too late for the Ashes, but it should begin as soon as they get home from the Caribbean.
You’re right Andrew, the best county championship players at present are either Overseas players, kolpaks or ex England old age pensioners such as Mark Ramprakash, Marcus Trescothick etc. Players such as Bopara and Rashid should already be in the team but England seem scared to pick young players.

February 8, 2009 at 15:07 #208894I’m not sure who first used the term ‘blackwash’ but yes, it is a little strange and belongs to a different era.
I don’t think it’s going to happen anyway.
February 8, 2009 at 21:29 #208999I think "Great" Britain is finally coming out of the politically correct dictatorship.
Black is black, surely?
I’m a Honky and proud

It’s interesting that some black people refer to other black people as "Niggas"….is that acceptable?
I agree colour has nothing to do with sport – well, it shouldn’t do.
But how many fields in life are defined by meritocracy?
I find the Sun newspaper a tad homophobic at times – usually wrapped in some sort of "blokey" humour, as if that makes it acceptable – I find that more disconcerting than the term Blackwash.
I suppose it is an individual’s right to be offended but not be offensive?

February 12, 2009 at 01:53 #209768OK – 2nd test soon and it will be interesting to see if England fight back.
Do you think it will be the draw the bookies predict?
I have thought about it and feel I should be stubborn and give Cookie one more chance to top bat for 1st innings – even so he looks dodgy at the mo.
He’s 5/1 Tote
I’ll stick with Sarwan for WI
He’s 9/2 Tote
Sounds silly, but once a player top bats it "seems" less likely that he will do it again next innings…no doubt that is tosh – but how many batsman do regularly top score in reasonable succession for their country? KP aside

February 14, 2009 at 00:20 #210024At least we didn’t lose the Second Test

What are the bookie’s doing are they paying out on the draw?
February 14, 2009 at 01:33 #210035Nothing wrong with that pitch. Give them a couple of plastic bats, a sponge ball and make the fielders wear flip-flops.
It will be interesting to see how they resolve this. I’m not sure it can be fixed overnight and the old St John’s ground is unlikely to be ready. They might have to ask that nice Mr Stanford if they can borrow his pitch for a bit.
I have no idea what the bookies are doing, but since there was talk of having an extra day, I think they’d be holding fire at the moment. The day’s play was abandoned, not the match. And three and a half days is usually enough to beat us.

All a bit confusing this lark. I think now they have abandoned the match so I assume stakes will be returned. But, I don’t know
February 14, 2009 at 02:23 #210047I stand corrected – last I knew this afternoon, play had only been abandoned for the day, but you are right, it is a draw. Not sure what rules are for an abandonment. The traditional way of describing it is ‘match abandoned as a draw’.
I’ll try and find out.
February 14, 2009 at 02:35 #210052There will be another Test at St Johns, Antigua, starting on Sunday, which will now be the Third Test, so we will have effectively a five match series. I think.
As the match was abandoned as a draw, that is a result, so all bets should stand, I would have thought. There is a note on the Betfair Service page saying a further announcement would be made at 5pm, but nothing more. Ed Hawkins is saying that all bets will stand on his Betfair Blog, but that isn’t official.
February 14, 2009 at 03:36 #210068Not sure it can be called a "five match series."
Really glad the various ruling bodies have moved quickly to have the 3rd test on Sunday, but the Antiguan pitch looks a bit ropey, too?!
They said on Sky Harmy may come back…
The craziest aspect of the abandoned game is when match referee Alan Hurst effectively said that they had no way of knowing the pitch was that bad until someone bowled on it?!
Erm, could they not have let someone thunder down a few deliveries a few days before? Is that against ICC rules?
It all seems very British

February 14, 2009 at 13:12 #210086Well rather than replaying the Second Test, they called it a draw and are starting a Third Test in Antigua. What were the Third and Fourth Tests will now be the Fourth and Fifth Tests.
So England have stopped the rot with a draw.
Actually, as I remember, in 1990, we won the First Test sensationally in Sabina Park and then our momentum was broken when the Second Test in Guyana was washed out (they usually were).
Skybet are paying out on the draw and refunding other bets
February 15, 2009 at 00:46 #210262Maybe I’m being unpatriotic – well done England on the draw!
Hope Nash plays well for you, Andrew.
I wonder if Cookie will bat well……

February 15, 2009 at 00:52 #210264Well Cook’s problems are technical and can be resolved, thought it is hard to do that mid-series. He is also young, has plenty of time and seems the right sort of character to cope with Test cricket in the long run.
