Thanks, Moehat. So do I, like the old format best.
I’m intrigued by this second favourite of Cumani’s, Qahriman. Has there ben a plunge on him or was he always well fancied? His racecourse form seems nothing to write home about, but time and again, anomalies in the betting shows prove to be a good indicator.
August 9, 2012 at 10:01 #409314Well having looked through the field and form I have placed my 2nd and final bet in the Ebor now!
Got the fav at 8s (still think he may not get in!) and my outsider has been given a nice mention by Moe.
I have been told that Jim Goldie is extremely sweet on the chances of
August 9, 2012 at 12:52 #409332Can’t believe how stingy the bookies are with their odds these days; Hammerfest is only 12/1 and I’m not sure he’ll run
. Will definately back Icon Dream. although, much as I love Graham Lee, I was hoping for a claimer to take bit of weight off him. Dreamspeed is intersting at 20’s, and Tominator could be good if back to his best
. But, what with The Sporting Life site not being so easy to study and oddschecker crashing every 10 seconds it’s not as much fun looking at these races as it used to be. I did wonder if this will be the year of a weight carrying performance, but it usually goes to 8.12 or less. Cumani has a good record in the race, I believe. I did like the look of Media Hype but doubt that he’ll get in.

Trainer said today that Hammerfest would be better on good or good to firm:-

I am finding it as well to wait to the eve of the race given the unappetising odds on offer ante-post in these tough handicaps.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
August 9, 2012 at 20:59 #409378Yes I read that today; to be honest I’d never heard of him till yesterday and assumed that, as he’d been racing in France was a soft ground horse. Think he was bred by Willie Carson. Quarhiman sounds pretty good as well if he gets into the race.
August 12, 2012 at 09:39 #409579Does anyone know why Tominator didn’t run last year? Was Pricewised I believe before the race. Not sure if he’ll get in on 8.11 or if the ground will suit and he seemed to be terribly over raced last year. Not sure why he’s only raced a couple of times this year. There’s another horse I’ve been looking at that I don’t know much about, but I think you’ll all laugh if I mention it so I’ll wait awhile and try to find out more about him. Would definately back the three year old, Ursa Major, but can’t see that one getting in on 8.9, and the Irish Horse, Royal Diamond is interesting as well. Race will probably go to a weight carrying 4 year old this year, all of which I’m totally ignoring [tend to stick with low weighted 5 year olds, although ignored every trend going last year with Moyenne Corniche, other than the fact he was on a very low weight].
August 12, 2012 at 13:21 #409591With not knowing if they’re running, intending to run or will get into the race [and ages before the all important draw is made] I’ve backed Hammerfest, Icon Dream, Dreamspeed, Tominator and Royal Diamond. Also Harlestone Times who seems to have been around forever but is still only five and has got some very good form with horses like Mount Athos. Whether he’s a complete monkey or just rubbish or a light of his former self, I don’t know, but a small ew at 33/1 seemed like a good idea. Would definately back Ursa Major if it ran. Hope I won’t be tempted to have more bets before I go on me hols at the end of the week! As I won’t be here after next weekend good luck to everyone who has a bet.
August 18, 2012 at 19:55 #410123Does anyone know anything about Hammerfest? Won over 15f.
I find the betting on him very suspicious, Moehat.
August 23, 2012 at 14:55 #410675Good news then, the favourite gets in easily and the rain arrives to add some cut!
Personally i think if he turns up in the same form as LTO he will take all the beating.
August 24, 2012 at 19:50 #410863If the rain stays away, I am really keen on Harrison’s Cave each-way. With all of that USA blood in his pedigree, there is ample explanation for his poor runs in soft conditions.
With Coolmore’s regular targetting of this race en route to Melbourne with horses like Honolulu, I think he’s worth a chance with the right conditions.
August 25, 2012 at 07:09 #410913I had the winner of this a few years back but it didn’t run

It’s not been my favourite race or betting in so hopefully if I pick one about to run stinker it will be withdrawn at the start.
I am now going to look at the race for the fist time:::
2 mins later; Cambourne will win that and his biggest dangers are Frankies mount and Hammerfest

I uses the lowest prices highest in the weight system which is as good as any in these handicaps
August 25, 2012 at 19:34 #411008Nothing stood out for me so no bet and watched it with a neutral eye for once ( albeit praying that my old favourite Crackentorp wouldn’t win – didn’t believe he could defy such a high mark )
Overwhelming take out from the race for me was the performance of Tominator … in a race often full of hard luck stories, particularly for hold up horses, he endured a nightmare passage in the home straight.
Assuming setbacks at home were not the reason for only two undistinguished runs so far this season, I’m guessing everything was geared up towards today as his main target … Have to say, I rate Graham Gibbons and wouldn’t wish to be too hard on him and feel it was just one of those days when the gaps didn’t open when you needed them.
Swinging off the the bridle most of the way, he had to switch direction 3 or perhaps 4 times looking for the gap in the straight and by the time he finally saw daylight the principals had gone beyond recall but he ran on really strongly up the stands side and was beaten less than 5 lengths at the line … Not saying he would necessarily have won but would certainly have been placed.
Don’t imagine there’s too much for him before the end of this season unless they have pretensions of staying the Cesarewitch distance but, as a 5 year old, one can only hope he comes to the race again next year in the same form and has better luck in running than he did today !!
September 1, 2012 at 18:04 #411712Satisfying result today and on a course which I didn’t think would suit … only serves to highlight how unlucky he was last Saturday
September 1, 2012 at 18:46 #411715Back from me hols; Harlestone Times withhdrawn..Royal Diamond just gets beat
and I had to endure watching Tominator’s race today still with no internet access and no bookie for miles! Hadn’t realised he’d had such a rough race in the Ebor, though, which at least makes me happy about my selections. Note to self ‘don’t end up in the back of beyond on Ebor day next year’…..
