Seems to be one those typical french horses that peaked at young age, then didn’t fill potential
yes he came over and won two cross country’s but since then and whatever that injury setbacks he has had. Just not the same horse

January 29, 2023 at 00:07 #1632725He’s just waiting for me to not back him.
January 29, 2023 at 05:48 #1632732There was money for him yesterday Moehat , he was 6s briefly , the diff was yesterday he didn’t travel as well as he did earlier in the season but then he did finish ….. I should leave him to but I’ll have to tickle the 40s/50s

March 15, 2023 at 22:09 #1639705It’s JP. They’re plotting him up for next year’s County Hurdle.
March 15, 2023 at 22:46 #1639716Since his move from D Cottin to Jonjo O’Neil they have tried him over hurdles, cross country races and standard chase races at trips ranging from 2m 4f up to 3m 6f and in 5 of his last 8 races he has P/U and in the 3 he did manage to actually complete he was beaten a total of 98L.
He is only a 9 yr old I know but this is actually a worse case of a horse clearly not wanting to race anymore than Lostintranslation was – this is something those vocal minority whip people would have a much better case at proving its unfair/cruel to continuing asking a horse to race when it is clear he has had enough.
They need to retire him plan and simple, I am sure JP has a place for at one of his studs where he can be placed alongside some of his other retired racehorses.
March 16, 2023 at 07:47 #1639742Maybe it is not relevant but David Cottin is currently facing a one year suspension for doping offences.
March 16, 2023 at 08:22 #1639749I think this song covers it pretty well
Pick 3 on Saturday champion 2025/2026
March 16, 2023 at 08:42 #1639752Jonjo O’Neill was a great jockey in his day, not the horseman John Francome was but surely the strongest in a finish.
As a trainer?
He’s certainly had a lot of quality material to work with.
The returns?
I’d liken him to a Manager of Real Madrid with an unlimited player budget who never seems to achieve more than a mid table finish in the Primera Liga, but does occasionally win the Copa Del Rey.

It’s a results relative to resources thing.
He should be up there challenging Paul Nicholls and Nicky Henderson every season.

March 16, 2023 at 11:31 #1639794It is an impressive list on the face of it. But if you take out Sky Pirate’s win in a handicap, the last of those big race wins was (unless I have missed something) in 2016.
It is perfectly fair to ask why O’Neill has not had better results in the last few seasons given the connections who support him.
March 16, 2023 at 11:57 #1639797Gold Cup, Grand National, Christmas Hurdle, multiple Stayers Hurdles, Irish Nationals, Ryanairs, Triumph Hurdle, Albert Bartlett, Aintree Bowl, Melling Chase, etc, etc, ….multiple handicap successes in the top tier.
His success has waned in recent years but there is no doubt he can train at the very top level. Maybe more Antonio Conte than Pep Guardiola but certainly no Sam Allardyce or David Moyes.
March 16, 2023 at 13:53 #1639845A stats guru pal of mine just told me O’Neill has sent out 142 horses this season and the top RPR achieved by any of them is 149.
Overall, I’d still say that’s not the best ROI for his owners.
Apparently Laura Morgan has amassed half the prize money O’Neill has – I bet Laura wouldn’t mind 50% of O’Neill’s ammunition.
