Andrew Balding horses have been badly needing their first outings, so I’d be surprised if Dalghar won. Chiberta King, who was 112 when fresh, and I Love Me, who won a Sales race on her racecourse debut, both looked extremely unfit at Newmarket last week.

Duke of york paddock picks – delegator and rain delayed.

    Negative dalghar.

It’s really unfair of Andrew Balding to be producing his well-fancied and well-backed horses like this. Chiberta King was 112 when fresh, I Love Me was 1 when fresh and Dalghar was 12 when fresh if ignoring his juvenile season.

And those 3 horses have finished last of 12, beaten 68L, 9th of 18, beaten 11L and 6th of 14, beaten 3L. Very disappointing.

Balding has said openly his horses have needed a run this season; Cumani also, irrespective of their general well-being compared to previous seasons.

I don’t see the problem. Balding’s Side Glance in particular was stunning after he’d had his pipe-opener.

Delegator absolutely cantered all over the field; Markab isn’t in his league.

Time will tell, first thing he has to do is stay sound!

Cantered all over them until push came to shove, then had to be given 5 good smacks to win half a length from a horse whom the ground had gone against slightly.
85% fit or not, I’d doubt he’d have the speed to win a big one at 6f, personally.

Frankie said he didn’t accelerate like he can, the horse has done little all winter due to niggles, and goes past a tough, top group 1 horse on ground Gosden described as slow side of good.

Will be cantering 1f out at Ascot, before quickening and staying on like he did up the dip at HQ behind the legend horse over a mile.

    In theory anyway

Delegator won well, but I don’t think he was cantering over the opposition.

If you watched the race without knowing the identities of the horses involved, you’d think that the winner might be suited by an estra furlong.

I agree those fans of Markab should be pleased with the run. He had the penalty and was in front in a race run at possibly too strong an early pace. First two were last two two out, and the front runners fell by the wayside. Markab is getting on in years, but was improving only last year; so should be capable of at least matching that form this term.

However, do think Delegator is the one with the best chance of going on to Jubilee victory. Said on RUK to be a touch burly (or words to that effect). Although it is true he has a good record fresh and disappointed after a good reappearance last year. Simon Chrisford said he’s had problems since that day at Newbury. I do wonder whether his best fresh record may also have something to do with his attitude rather than anything physical.
Delegator travelled through today’s race better than any of the known sprinters, even the 5f specialists; so can’t see he’ll be outpaced in the Jubilee. Striked me as one who never quite got home at a mile and sprinting may bring a return to Delegator’s best.

I did not see anything better than 14/1 immediately after the race, wish I’d seen the 20/1.

    Delegator travelled well

    because

there was no great early pace in the race: most of the field remained together until the 2 pole, and there were still 10 horses in line inside the distance.
When the taps were turned on, he had to be driven to gradually assert over a horse the ground had gone against and the 93 rated Tiddliwinks.
Hardly gp1 6f form imo, and Delegator remains what he always has been – better at 7f, and unreliable.

bin suroor said although he won, he was only 85% fit, and there is more to come.

although i didn’t have a bet, i thought 5/1 was very generous, considering the ability of the horse. not many horses get within 1 and a half lengths to sea the stars, and i put sea the stars up there with nijinsky, dancing brave etc.

    Del Boy,

You should not confuse the Sea The Stars who won the 2000 Guineas with the Eclipse and Irish Champion winner. Sea The Stars was not an outstanding Guineas winner and only later improved in to a true Star.

Delegator came second in a 2000 Guineas which was not a vintage year.

However, that form should still see Delegator go close in 6 furlong Group 1’s this year; perhaps even at the minimum trip the way he went yesterday. And in all of his best mile performances (eg Guineas and St James’s Palace) travelled best of all two out. So there is a possibility of better to come at the shorter distance.

If they went "no great early pace" Reet, then Delegator’s performance was an even better one.

Breaking standard by almost half a second after "no great early pace"; when no other race on the day came close to that, on obviously Good ground.

After "no great early pace", must have needed to show tremendous speed to accelerate from last to first in the last couple of furlongs in a Group 2.

To do what he did after "no great early pace", ie even faster latter stages, surely shows Delegator does have the speed for 6f Group 1’s?

Of course Delegator needs to improve on this form to win the Jubilee, but there is every indication he is capable of doing so. Provided the race does not come to soon.

Not saying Delegator is going to win the Jubilee, just that he is (sorry, was) excellant value to win @ around 14/1.

Yeah I also found that a strange comment. Ladies Are Forever, Regal Parade and Prime Defender were off the bridle 4 out.

I’ve worked out that Reet often says things to wind me up OSS. That’s probably why I don’t let it do so these days.

Either way gentlemen it has to be said your two’s contributions to the ‘142 Frankel thread’ have made it the thread of the year so far imo.Superb opinions given modestly.

My 5/2 anti-post bet on your namesake OH So Sharp in the 1000 Guineas (along with Slip Anchor 16/1 in the Derby) paid for my first Timeform purchases.
