There is only one horse for me in this race KOOL KOMPANY winner of the 2015 Craven Stakes at Newmarket and last October, also at Newmarket, beaten by a neck by stable companion Estidkhaar.
The booking of Ryan Moore is very interesting..Kool Kompany spent some time in the United States with Chris Waller but wasn’t successful there and since returning to Richard Hannon’s yard he seems to be back on track.
Looking forward to seeing his big white face bursting out of the stalls and leading the field and hopefully not getting pegged back at the last by the likes of Bravo Zolo, who I will have a small saver on and put in a reverse forecast.
Good luck it looks like a really competitive race..Jac
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...March 30, 2017 at 00:20 #1294537I can’t believe Kool Kompany is only 5 years old, seems to have been around forever.
John Gosden’s Crazy Horse is lightly raced and ran in that infamous French Guineas where The Gurkha won by half the track. I’m not too keen playing at 11/4 being the first run of the season but one to keep an eye on.Gaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
March 30, 2017 at 00:33 #1294540Noticed Oh This Is Us holds an entry in this too Nathan along with a few other Lincoln Decs, makes it difficult to back them before the race when only the trainer knows where they’re heading.
Crazy Horse is a classy horse, owned by Gosden’s wife and he has beaten Estidkhaar and will appreciate some give in the ground and he has Frankie Dettori on board. Good luck with him.

John Gosden has a few good horses entered up at the Meeting and could be off to a flyer.
Only a few more days to go now. Jac
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...March 31, 2017 at 11:31 #1294682The money in the Doncaster Mile was for Antarctic Storm initially.
This was the horse who won the Craven run in a thunderstorm last year and then became the “Shrewd Money” each-way selection for the Guineas in the aftermath.
I nailed my colours to the mast early and described the Craven form as “Bobbins” and looking back now I am happy my first instinct was correct. Foundation went on to disappoint bitterly and Antarctic Storm did not win again.
I am happy to take Antarctic Storm on again at his odds here.
In some ways Crazy Horse stands out for John Gosden, he was quietly fancied by some as a Guineas contender last year but went to the French version on his seasonal debut and then wasn’t seen again until October, so he must have had a setback. A Salisbury win was followed by a couple of very late season second places in France. Overall I feel he’s a bit short in price considering a very much “Plan B” season last year.
Custom Cut is one who makes some each-way appeal at 8/1. He doesn’t win very often but he runs in tough company most times and this will be his first drop from Group Races to Listed in a year and going back in time from that it is another 2 years to his last run in Listed Class, all the others were Group races.
This represents easier company for Custom Cut than he often faces and 8/1 to be in the 1-2-3 seems reasonable value compared to win only on the leading two in the betting.
Toscanini is hard to fancy at a mile, given that all five of his wins have been at 6F and it seems odd that a horse campaigned as a sprinter for so long should suddenly be a miler.
It’s nearly two years since Kool Kompany won the Craven and he hasn’t scored since. That race didn’t work out very well and I can’t fancy him for this.
Custom Cut may be capable of landing this prize and he surely has a solid chance of placing at each-way odds.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
March 31, 2017 at 17:18 #1294714Think you mean Stormy Antartic Steve

Not putting too much on this race and will stick with my choice Kool Kompany, he deserves to win a nice race like this but often finds one better so good luck and enjoy a great days racing.

Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...March 31, 2017 at 18:14 #1294728My pick for this is TULLIUS and 11/1 is huge!! Won the race two years ago and is a pretty good yardstick for this quality of race. He stays a bit further and I think the pace of this race will suit him down to the ground!!
Crazy Horse could be the fly in the ointment but I think he is wanting soft or even heavy ground to show his best and the sun is shining up here only twenty minutes from Donny!!
March 31, 2017 at 18:32 #1294732Are you going Raymo? What a great card and a Frankel colt in the last Immortalised.
Good luck with Tullius bring some cakes down to The Lounge if he wins
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...March 31, 2017 at 19:25 #1294737Keeping an eye on the weather forecast Jac.
If it looks like rain then no we won’t be going but if it stays dry we will be there!!

Och, you know the horse, Bad Weather something or other, flopped in the Guineas.
Anyway, thanks for putting me right. I think Antarctic Storm was with Richard Fahey many moons ago. He wasn’t great if I recall correctly.
I just did a small each-way on Custom Cut for this and another bet on Birchwood because of a unique form boost of sorts.
I bought some cooked chicken from the Lidl supermarket the other day and the manufacturer was “Birchwood”, that somehow bolsters my confidence. I feel that obscure supermarket brands and horses is an area not many people have cottoned onto yet although I have doubts that the small supermarket I was in just outside of Benidorm is every likely to have a horse named after it. My kids were much amused to see goods in the window of the shop sitting proudly below the brand name “ARSE”
I still have a photo of that somewhere.

March 31, 2017 at 21:55 #1294759One for you Jac..x.I took this one just before he ran in the 2000 Gns.

I never saw Stormy Antartic win The Craven last year Steve as lightning struck the top of the stand and everything went down, the TV’s, the commentary, the Tote..we just stood dripping wet under our brollys waiting to see who came back into the winners enclosure first, it was the worst Craven ever.Lots of strangely named Spanish foods in supermarkets over there, the funniest that I saw was a washing powder called Colon, needless to say gave that one a miss.
Good luck with Birchwood and Custom Cut tomorrow, although Custom Cut’s been beaten twice by Tullius they are at level weights tomorrow so it will be a close match between those two.

JacThanks Jac, you were correct about “Everything went down”, I know my ante-post Derby bet on Foundation at 33/1 went down the pan about 10 seconds before the winning line in the Craven. Appropriately enough it was the toilet pan that it was flushed away via and the waste was processed at sewage centre 5H sector 1T

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Thank you so much Gord
that is the best shot I’ve ever seen of KK you’ve captured a great look on his face.I’d love to steal that picture off you for my new Avatar on here but don’t know how to
do it
but I have managed to put him on my desktop so will see that handsome
face every morning…thank you.xOf course the icing on the cake will be if he wins the Doncaster Mile tomorrow, have him in an each way double with Top Notch Tonto in the Lincoln. Win or lose I’m going to enjoy watching two of my favourite horses.
Good luck with all your choices this flat season Gord…
JacHope you don’t mind that I have now stolen your great shot of KK for my Avatar Gord, it didn’t all quite fit the specs required so had to edit 50% but it still looks great. Thank you

It’s a brave call backing Ante Post the only horse I ever won any money on was Dawn Approach.
I often wonder what would have happened if they had withdrawn Foundation from the Craven that day as something must have spooked him in the race, he was a brilliant 2yo but after running in that thunderstorm he was never the same again.
