Shortlist I have for this grueller includes:
Old Benny (out and out stayer but probably just a stepping stone for the 4 miler at Chelt next month but stable coming to form)
Jass (won this last year, mud lover, dropped 4lb from the Our Vic Haydock race where he got tired towards the end, interesting)
Turpin Green (tumbling down the weights and now on a mark of 138 with 5lb to claim, will relish conditions, trip unknown but worth a go)
Rambling Minster (would take an almighty performance to defy top weight but is 3lb lower than his last win and will love both trip and ground)
Gidam Gidam (likes the course, good 3rd in this last year and on same mark)
Out of these 5 I’m most inclined to side with last year’s winner Jass, stable are in form and is proven at the distance.
February 6, 2010 at 08:30 #274313I agree that
Jass
and
Gidam Gidam
have claims. However, Bay Cherry has done nothing but improve and if he can handle the distance is the one for me!
Knighton Combe
may be out of his depth and I am sure
Stagecoach Diamond
will keep plugging on and may yet steal a place!

Chiaro looks to need this kind of extreme test – even the Scottish National wasn’t far enough for him on good ground.
Acts on soft, has had the necessary warm-up over hurdles, and looks to need a win to get into National field proper.
At 8/1 and paying 4 places, he really ought to reward an each way play ,at least.February 6, 2010 at 14:53 #274407

I can’t see beyond Bay Cherry in this.
February 6, 2010 at 15:53 #274423Alderburn hasn’t been tried on the surface very often but goes on it, jumps well and looks as though it’ll get the trip.
February 6, 2010 at 15:55 #274426King Harald for me – very good record in these sort of races, was running ok at Cheltenham in a XC race before slipping up and hopefully that will have rekindled his interest for the game.
February 6, 2010 at 17:37 #274457Of the 5 that I circled, Gidam Gidam prevailed at 16/1 and the veteran Turpin Green second at 28/1.
On another note, can’t believe Monkerhostin won – what an admirable old horse he is fair play, great training performance.
