We have just bought a dog. A Border Terrier bitch and we haven’t decided on a name for it yet.

Its a black and brown one.

I quite like the name Mambo, but the kids don’t. They all want to call it Yarra, as in the book.

We don’t get it from the breeder for another two weeks .. what do you reckon?

Yarra? what book is that?? surely she needs a Scottish girls name…I’m sure Corm or Rob could come up with one of those..[as you can see I tend to anthropomorphize my pets]

My brother breeds neopolitan Mastiffs and his latest dog is called BRUTO DI ALLEVAMENTO PATRIZIO ITALIA. Im sure that the dog answers to that name every single time., :?

However, for people not so sure about names that are mental in the extreme, I used to have an ex police dof which was half rotterweiler/half labrador which was called shep when we first got it. Because he was jet black and shep sounded a bit out of sorts uin a built up area we just called him "Jet" and he was right as rain. I think it must just be a case of finding a name that your dog will respond to and trying to find a name around that sound.

On the other hand I have a Llasa apsoh (probably not the right spelling) who is shaved so that he looks like an ewok, and he has been called barney since he was born, which he responds to, so i suppose all in all, just come up with a name thast you are happy with and that wont be old within the dogs life expectancy and it sghould be good.

My mate used to have three cats, who, through distictive coloration, were called Guiness, Smirnoff and Shitt-ass so dont really think you can go far wrong.

If he’s a terrier, what about Terry, alternatively theres Rex, Fido, Shep, Max, Kaiser and a whole host of others.

Millie has also come into the frame.

Yarra was the cheeeta’s name in a book called ‘The Runaways’.

It’s true I am a cat person, but I feel the addition of a dog to the household may well be a good thing. One of our cat’s died a couple of years ago after a short and murderous life .. the other one that’s still with us has stopped moving around much and mainly just sleeps. So a dog will liven things up a bit.

Thanks for the thoughts so far.

Duke btw is a boy’s name.

I’ve always been a cat person but for various reasons have been cat less for several years now; that’s why I have whippets…all they want in life is to sit onyour lap at night watching telly and because they’re such clean dogs and they think it’s their God given right to sit on the sofa Hattie is now my cat substitute. Border terriers are feisty little creatures full of character..think you’ll have a lot of fun with her!

I’m not that fond of using human names for animals although children might relate to it better. My last dog was a mix of many shades of grey, so we called her Hazy.
My next dog will be called Laika, in memory of the little one cast into space by the Russians in 1957.

For your dog Dave, a black/brown bitch, I think I might go for something quick and snappy, like
    Mokka [as in…mocha]…

I’m sure your kids would love to run amucka with Mokka. :)

hope all’s well up in Ayr….bit bracing this Summer I imagine.

I dont think Im either a cat person or a dog person, have always had dogs and a few cats but none at present. They both have their better points and worse points but I would find it hard to say I like one more than the other but if I had to get one or the other tomorrow, I would probably get a dog.

Cats are more house animals than dogs IMO, they take much less looking after and they will generally let you know when they want out for the toilet, fed etc, as thats when they are your best friend. On the downside, if they dont want something from you at any given point in time a cat wouldnt even acknowledge your existance.

Dogs on the other hand absolutely love you to bits, all of the time. You can train them to do loads of things, and they will generally just do it just for the attention. On the downside they need regular walks, eat more than cats and seem to need to visit the vet a lot more,

At the minute I have four dogs, A full bred rottweiller bitch (extremely obedient, dosile and a total attention seeker). A Half Mastiff/Half St Bernard- huge powerful big stamp of a dog (about the size of a small cow), would terrify any burglar but has to chew everything he sees (we took evrything out of the back yard, except his water bucket, and he chewed the water bucket and the downpipe coming from the sink). I also have the little Llasa apso and he is brilliant, wont do anything you ask and just loves mischief, but the best thing about him is that he doesnt shed his hair (he just has to get clipped every few months). Have also been baby sitting a pure bred mastiff bitch for my brother who looks like the most evil dog you have ever seen (it has red eyes at the minute which need operated on as they sit in front of her normal eyes and she cant see). I love all my dogs though, but they are high maintenance.

In summary, IMO you put a lot into a dog and you get a lot back, but you put very little into a cat and you get very little back. Its all just depends on your lifestyle and spare time which is better suited to you.

Cats and dogs are the only pets I would ever consider having. I had a rabbit when I was younger and it was just the most pointless pet ever. Plus i read somewhere that rabbits can eat their own faeces, so by that logic you only ever need to feed them once…wrong, that was £4 down the drain…

Had two hamsters when I was younger aswell and it was very nice to come dowen the stairs one day to see that one had eaten the other one’s head and was sitting looking at me with blood all over his face. Evil little gits they are.

PS was only joking about the rabbit before anyone calls the RSPCA.

I like guinea pigs; you can have a pretty decent conversation with a guinea pig…….I don’t think you’re supposed to keep hamsters with other hamsters…..you can keep russian hamsters with other russian hamsters but then you end up with millions of them. best name ever for a dog was my friends Weimaraner who was called Spook [their eyes glow yellow in the dark] and another friend has two border terriers called Red and Blue, which I think is kinda cute….

I remember when I was at school, our hippy biology teacher thought she would show us how a society developed by filling a huge fish tank with sand and keeping gerbils in it. Within a couple of weeks the thing was stinking and a week or so after that there were loads of gerbils in it. I can’t quite recall how long it took but we came into the school one Monday morning to find legs and other body parts all over the sand. Needless to say, the boys thought this was brilliant, genocidal gerbils. But the most of the girls and the teacher were quite upset, this just wasn’t supposed to happen. The caretaker was called and the tank emptied. No-one ever fully explained what happened to the survivors, maybe they were sent off to the Hague?

    Anyway, the name saga goes on .. this is the current short list;
    Millie
    Yarra
    Mokka
I’m going to propose Fudge to the team as well, it will probably be rejected out of hand, but you never know.

Yarra is still the front runner because it’s disliked the least. Her kennel name is ‘Summer Nights Dream’ .. can hardly see me and the missus shouting that all over the estate, the first time she escapes the garden.
