Does anybody know what happened to Johnny Buckingham the Jockey of Foinavon?
April 12, 2010 at 17:16 #289906There was a feature on Buckingham during the BBC’s Grand National programme on saturday.
He accepted the ride on Foinavon after a few other jockeys had turned it down.
Funny to think that prior to his win, the horse was once trained by Tom Dreaper in Ireland – and owned by Anne, Duchess of Westminster, who also owned another horse whom she also named after a Scottish mountain.

Buck’s in his 60’s now, he sold his valet business and retired. Didn’t Francome or Dunwoody organise a testimonial at some golf course for him?
He was in hospital for an op on his back and some other ailment but is out and about as far as I know.
April 12, 2010 at 17:40 #289911He was going to be at our preview last week but wasn’t there, so I was a bit concerned, but I’m sure he was on the telly on Saturday. In fact, I know he was because I turned to Mike and said ‘I bet he could write a book about the time he was Francomes valet, let alone riding a Grand National winner’. He was installed in the Hall of Fame [not literally installed]. Really nice guy.
