PMSL at Andy Stewart at around the 2:35 mark.
Thanks for that. This is growing on me.
For all the wrong reasons.
February 12, 2010 at 21:02 #275955This is exactly the sort of thing that embarrasses racing as a sport – the kind of "drunk parents on the dancefloor at your wedding" school of cringeworthiness….
OK – we know Nicky Henderson, Paul Nicholls, Andy Stewart, Thommo and Mottershead are never going to be "cool" (in any sense of the word), but please – just don’t even try, ffs..
February 12, 2010 at 21:15 #275958Great to see Thommo get his big chance at last – can’t believe they put him in the back row.
Who is the dark-haired women at the back featured about three times?
I don’t think it is really going to lead to any great embarassment. After all who in racing would you describe as ‘cool’?
I am guessing most of those taking part knew it was going to be rubbish but well done to them for giving it a go.

I didn’t believe you, but Mottershead can indeed be spotted at 1:15. Well, I never.
February 12, 2010 at 21:47 #275970Suprised they didn’t give Andy Stewart his own gangster rap line with those sIcK moves
February 12, 2010 at 21:53 #275971The theory is good but, as Corm says, the execution could have been better.
For me it would have been better if the video had been exclusively of the action and sights of the festival without the embarassing shots of "celebs" who clearly did not want to be there.
The worrying thing is I remember when the "original" first came out
February 12, 2010 at 23:04 #275988Times must be tough for Tony Hatch and Jackie Trent if they`ve sanctioned this.
Would like to think Capt.T Forster would have given this a wide berth.

I had the same thought re: Tony Hatch.
It was a brave effort I guess but cringe-making does not even come close to describing this little ditty.
Thommo was starting to wave his arms around in the air just to get attention it seemed. Surely this is a sign of the times…
Do you think there is any chance Thommo and McCririck may join the cast of Last of the Summer Wine?
Craig.

I think there are a few who are scared of modernisation down to their strong ties to Racing and are probally scared that their history may be tainted by a new generation but I think its for the best.
Music is a sensational form of marketing, you dont have to be the best musician heck you dont even need to be able to play an instrument or sing to make an impression on the public, Noddy, Peter Kay and Rage of the Machine all went to no.1
This is a great way to show of racing in a good light, would you rather a bent scandal on the back page or this theme song for Racing? I know what I’d rather have. Think the video puts the enjoyment and passion of Racing at Cheltenham into a fine perspective backed up by wonderfuly timed and on point lyrics to the visuals.
Lets not forget this is for charity and a good cause which will be well recieved in the media, I personally think its catchy and has a great hook to it but we must thank those who auditioned against their initial instinct of saying NO, maybe a few of you can do the same? and why are we so fixated with whose in the video?.
Time for change, oldies.
February 13, 2010 at 01:51 #276003they should have done the wizzard song instead, and replaced christmas with cheltenham
i wish it could be cheltenham everydaaaaaaaaaay
February 13, 2010 at 02:48 #276005It’s horrific and should be stopped with immediate effect. I don’t do "charity," so I’m happy to tear into it at any point in time.
Although, as the song is so good according to some, I’d like Edward Gillespie to have the song played as every winner returns to the winners enclosure at Cheltenham. It’s for a good cause after all, just not for our ear’s. Everyone would be fed up after just the Supreme Novices.
February 13, 2010 at 08:22 #276029Mr Wilson,
Modernisation is something I would love to see. Perhaps in the form of sectional timing, weighing of horses, more international racing on standard surfaces. I appreciate it is easier to get a few trainers/jocks/desperado hacks etc to sing a song though. Hail this modernisation.
February 13, 2010 at 08:45 #276032Could have been worse, I guess. Was never going to be a great moment in music/comedy/racing history.
You want a way of making racing appeal to the masses? Trying banning Big Mac from appearing on any non-racing programme for a start…

That’ll be the new generation of McCririck, Thommo, Andy Stewart and Clive Smith, right? Doing a cover of a 1965 song in the time-honoured style of charity singles over the decades.
Like Smithy, I CRAVE modernisation of this sport. What I abhor is the prospect of its being overrun by people with no taste, regardless of their age. But, hey, the song is not (quite) that bad. I can live with it.
This is a great way to show of racing in a good light, would you rather a bent scandal on the back page or this theme song for Racing? I know what I’d rather have.
What an absurd and completely fatuous choice. How about the option of NEITHER? Or how about the option of this and something that is just a bit more "cred" and a lot less twee?

Much better idea Detroit.
If we’re talking about something the younger generation (or indeed anybody) could connect with they should have got a few of racing’s pin-up girls (and guys) and did something which was remotely relevant.
‘I wish it could be Cheltenham every day,

In your dreams.
February 13, 2010 at 10:57 #276049I don’t understand why there appears to be such a strong reaction from some to this record. Unless I’ve missed the point isn’t it simply a charity record and in addition a bit of frothy, take it or leave it harmless fun
