What with his fine white blaze, matching sets of socks and a 2.4 million guineas yearling price tag an illustrious name was most definitely a necessity. Nevertheless he made his debut in the not so illustriously named Bord na Mona Recycing EBF maiden over 7f in the first race at the Curragh on Saturday. What did anyone make of that the burst of acceleration at the 1f mark to victory? Is he definitely more of a Derby prospect? O’Brien played him down as a bit of a baby post race. So what did you put in your notebook? :mail:

Could be the best he’s ever trained and he’ll improve abnormally.

The overall time was nothing to write home about, but the closing sectionals sometimes tell a different story.

He is good enough to win The Derby. But he has a lot of speed, so you could drop him down in distance and win a July Cup.

And he has a great mind. ;-)

Big price tag, you can buy 2.4 million Henry Adams for that

If City of Troy improves or even retains his ability at 3 I can’t see past him personally

Problem is the weight-for-age scale makes it clear that “retaining his ability” equates to making the average stone and a half improvement and no individual horse is guaranteed to do that.

This is why plunging on a brilliant 2yo for the Classics is so much riskier than plunging on a brilliant novice hurdler for the Champion Hurdle – the latter might be inexperienced but is already a fully-grown racehorse.

Fair play to Leopardstown for keeping “Good” in the going forecast for Diego’s date in the Champions Juvenile (Golden Fleece) stakes tomorrow after the almost unprecedented Mediterranean weather we’ve been having all week without even a proper cloudburst that I’ve been aware of anyway. Given the acceleration he showed over a furlong out over 7f last time out I’m just a little surprised he’s being asked to run over 1m when we’re just about into the second week in September. Will Soumillon be acting as an unlikely “meneur de train” to ensure a true run affair? I certainly wouldn’t like to see the favourite have to show that acceleration under pressure up that long stiff gradient in the straight. A watching brief for me. Would only be backing the favourite at odds-on if I was qualified to assert that he could beat the opposition in a canter in these conditions and I certainly am not.

Diego Velazquez comes across as one of those rarer types who can combine speed and stamina in equal measure (like Dancing Brave and Sea The Stars). Being by Frankel, I think the step up to a mile is a natural, sensible choice.

Should win today’s race by, at least, a comfortable 3 lengths IMO.

Capulet could be decent and they were clear of the third.

Diego could have shirked the issue but showed a good attitude. I think he won it easier than it looked.

Agree with Nevison (for once) on RTV that he may be more of a Curragh than Epsom horse.

I wasn’t quite as impressed with him as I was with Auguste Rodin in the equivalent race last year but I think it would be a mistake to underestimate him just because he came under pressure 2f out.

Democracy was only about 8 lengths behind
I’d liked to have seen him lapped
Same distance he got beat in a group 2 vs BUCANERO FUERTE albeit that was 6f
