I wouldn’t assume he weighs a great deal less.

Well, this is the reason I was thinking about this.

I was wondering how much above his flat racing weight Murtagh is riding at.

Because the proper racing season is coming up and I reckon Murtagh could be struggling through the next couple of months (or longer).

jackane, can’t agree with you about Ted Walsh. He the nobody’s "yes-man" – he calls it as he sees it. He also has a lot of time and respect for Johnny Murtagh. There is no way he would fall down on Robert Thornton’s side (or even Murtagh’s for that matter) if he didn’t think it was the right call.

Having seen the replay from head-on and the side a couple of times, I think it’s fair to say that both horses drifted towards each other when you look at the head-on, MWDS more so than GC. From the side, it doesn’t look like GC moves at all but MWDS obviously moves towards the other horse. Murtagh definitely stops driving GC forward for a split second (if you see it again, he gets to within 1 length, then MWDS pulls another 1/2 length clear before Murtagh gets to a short-head on the line)

It’s significant that Murtagh hasn’t commented on the incident or claimed any interference. It’s not like he has to face Thornton every day and it would have meant a lot to him to win yesterday. Not many jockeys (modern day anyway) have ridden a winner in a Group1 and a Grade1.

As I said earlier, I’m surprised that there was no enquiry called but I would also have been surprised if the positions had been reversed. Rightly or wrongly, Cheltenham stewards don’t reverse the placings lightly (Pizarro vs Rhinstone Cowboy & Faasel vs Penzance come to mind).

Does anyone know when the last time a Festival race had the placings reversed? (it’s times like these when you miss Peaty Sandy:biggrin: )

Has he been riding in Dubai? If so and with the Flat just a week or so away I can’t believe he’ll be much more than 9St. Or has he given up struggling to do less than 9?

    Good point.

He rode a horse carrying 8st8 last week, so weight is probably not a problem after all.

My two colleagues both backed Golden Cross, and whilst they did briefly hold some hope that the stewards inquiry bell would ring, neither had any complaint about the final result. On seeing the replay, I can understand why an inquiry might have been called, but could not see it changing the places, as I didn’t think the interference affected the outcome of the race.
