Quote: from dave 22 on 11:11 am on Nov. 29, 2006[br]just been looking at the triumph hurdle form. 6 of the first 7 home in last years triumph have won races this season. it seems to me that last seasons triumph was the strongest for years. this must be a positive for detroit city
I agree, it seems a much better than average renewal. Afsoun was impressive on saturday, as was fair along on his chasing debut
November 29, 2006 at 11:47 #30716Some people said at the time the Triumph was a good race. The much-missed EC pointed out how good a time it was run in.

Detroit City- we know about him.
Fair Along- Won a novice chase but was actually beaten in all his subsequent hurdle races.
Blazing Bailey- has come out and won a 4 year old only novice hurdle. Only won this after been beaten in 2 all aged races.
Pace Shot- has not won a race since.
Afsoun- Impressive winner since.
Turko- Didnt win a hurdle since
It is also worth noting that the likely third placed finisher that day (or even second) before he fell – Breathing Fire – has just about managed to win a maiden hurdle at Tralee after failing to win one at Killarney.
Its very very early yet to say it was a "vintage" Triumph hurdle as bar Afsoun all the major wins have been from 4 year olds novice chasers getting massive allowances.
November 29, 2006 at 16:42 #30718there showing more promise than other renewals of the race. thats all were saying.
November 29, 2006 at 19:46 #30719Without having looked at other recent renewals I couldnt be sure.
December 3, 2006 at 12:20 #30720Detroit City has done the Irish a great favour in the Anti-post market for the Champion Hdle, who would have thought that their odds would be this good in December!
December 5, 2006 at 13:48 #30721Aidan, you’ve missed some important points out there as Turko and Fair Along have been very impressive novice chasing this year.. Fair Along also carried 11-12 in his last hurdle race against older opposition finishing third which was no disgrace and the final race of last year he was obvioulsy suffering from exertions.. Best Triumph i’ve seen.. (But I haven’t been into racing that long)
December 5, 2006 at 14:32 #30722i think detroit city is going to have his work cut out on saturday to beat hardy eustace, who seems to be back to his best. imo. i think it will be a good race even though there is only likely to be a handful of runners
December 5, 2006 at 22:13 #30723
Yeah Dave, I’m a fan of Detroit City but 4-9 is a ridiculous price on Saturday. Hardy is very backable at 2-1 considering that he was upsides at the last in the Champion despite never being right health-wise all season.
December 5, 2006 at 22:36 #30724my heart is saying detroit city, but my head is saying hardy eustace! i thought they would be very short priced joint favourites, so 2-1 is very tempting.
December 5, 2006 at 22:49 #30725Hardy I think will be better at 2 1/2 miles these days. I expect Detroit City to put him in his place on Saturday. It goes without saying that the price is way too short though.
December 5, 2006 at 22:53 #30726
HE is actually 5-2 with the sponsors according to the RP.
December 5, 2006 at 22:54 #30727do you not think hardy looked back to himself at ascot?
when i saw him last year i thought he looked like he had past his best, but he looked much healthier this season. and they both stay well, so neither should be stopping, i think it will come down to who is the fastest up the hill.
December 5, 2006 at 23:05 #30728i hope your right, it does go against the grain though! A 4 year old hurdler favourite against a twice champion hurdler who was 3rd last year when ‘out of form’ and has won 3/4 of his runs at the track!

At Ascot he beat a three mile stayer the rest were useless.
December 5, 2006 at 23:25 #30730Agreed TMM.
December 6, 2006 at 10:42 #30731They should aim Hardy Eustace at the stayers’ this year. He doesn’t have the pace for 2 miles anymore I don’t think. I think there’s a good chance that Detroit City could end up as 5/2 fav for the Champion on Saturday night after winning the Bula, but without having shown any improvement. That being the case, I might well lay him at that price for all I maintain he’s the likeliest winner at this stage.
