I’m not considering Crowded House in my Derby equation – the Racing Post Trophy win told me he’s too sharp, more an ideal horse for the Prix du Jockey-Club.

Could be Myles, but hard to know if connections would send him there, especially as he is quite solid in the guineas market at present so that would appear to be his first port of call this year.
March 20, 2009 at 02:05 #217461Specific race names aside – there are a few who will outstay him at Epsom. And he’s no New Approach.
March 20, 2009 at 20:02 #217571"ROYAL LODGE STAKES winner Jukebox Jury, who suffered a setback last month when an injury to a fetlock took longer than anticipated to heal, is back in exercise, according to trainer Mark Johnston.
The 33-1 shot for the Stan James 2,000 Guineas also holds an entry in the Irish equivalent, and Johnston said: "He’s fine. His owner [Alan Spence] is coming to see him and he’ll canter on Tuesday. He had surgery for a skin wound.
"It was nothing career-threatening, just something that wasn’t healing properly.
"He’s done all his walking and trotting and he will be ready in time for the Guineas, if that’s where we decide to go."
The last 7 words are very interesting imo.

Can’t see Crowded House getting much further than 10 furlongs and Kite Wood still remainds the big bet for the Derby.
March 22, 2009 at 02:28 #217784Delighted to see money for Age of Aquarius for the Derby today. I absolutely love his pedigree…also been money for him for the Guineas but cannot see this being well placed given his breeding.
Still three for me…
Age Of Aquarius
Rip Van Winkle
KitewoodMarch 22, 2009 at 02:51 #217787I must admit I also do like Age Of Aquarious but regarding the betting on him, this has happened a few seasons running now. A big gamble starts on a really well bred horse in the AOB stable and the horse turns out to be not that special.
Last year it was Washington Irving, half brother to Alexandrova, big gamble at about this time last year.
In 2007 it was Macarthur, full brother to Motivator, big gamble at about the same time the previous year.
Cant even remember the previous years gambles.
This year its a galileo half brother to turtle bowl, I backed age of aquarious for that race in france at the end of last season but wasnt that impressed with him all in all, so will take this betting activity to be similar to previous years, and give it a miss for now unless he goes well in a trial.
March 22, 2009 at 03:06 #217791I wasn’t impressed with him at all in France either Bul’.
I had already backed him for Epsom and was a bit puzzled as to why they where running….maybe the record number of G1s.
Anyway the ground was absolutely desperate and he was ridden much more aggressively than I anticipated. Take your point about the annual gambles but in my view the others you mentioned wouldn’t quite have the pedigree of this chap. Judging by Dundalk a very good mover too.March 30, 2009 at 20:54 #219272I think Black Bear Island will be the new coolmore "Galileo"
March 31, 2009 at 19:21 #219415Jukebox Jury out until August in all probability.
Unlucky Bulwark.
March 31, 2009 at 20:58 #219425"Gutted" is the word that springs to mind…
April 8, 2009 at 12:33 #220862Anyone know when the latest entry stage is released?

22nd May I think is the final forfeit stage, supplementaries on June 1st.
April 12, 2009 at 09:48 #221402Black Bear Island out today in a pretty poor looking Prix La Force, should win fairly easily, will be interesting to see just how easily though.
April 12, 2009 at 20:14 #221480Black Bear Island definitely doesnt look up to derby class to me, obviously he did look very green today, and didnt have the clearest of runs (had options though), but that looked like a poor enough old race, and anything with a chance in the derby should have won. All in all looks like a hypemiester.

Oh dear Bul, i think you will eat those words come June!
April 12, 2009 at 20:19 #221483I agree Bulwark. Everything about Black Bear Island is hype all he’s done is win a maiden. Its one of those O’Brien situations replace the trainer with almost anyone else and he’d be a far bigger price.
Today’s race probably wasn’t ideal for him and he’s sure to improve but to win a Derby he’ll probably have to improve twenty odd pounds. I doubt very much that he’ll be in that sort of class from what we’ve seen so far in three races.
