So another racing forum brought this to my attention and I have to say I think I’m still in shock at the behaviour of this trainer.
Deputy Broad (USA) was sent directly to the kill pen within 48 hours of his last race at Mountaineer. His trainer, who is banned in Ohio, sent him to someone else who then sent him on again to a kill buyer based in Ohio. From there Deputy Broad was sent onto Canada to the Richelieu Meats Slaughterhouse on the 18/7/11.
People where trying to trace this horse and when they contacted the slaughterhouse they were informed that the shipment of horses had already been ‘processed’
Mountaineer Racetrack is supposed to have a policy whereby horses cannot be sold or sent off the track directly to slaughterhouses however this is obviously not being inforced and monitered. So who knows how mnay horses have actually just been sent over the border for meat.
I have also been informed of another story where a horse brokedown but instead of the horse being put down, the trainer had the horse sent back to his barn until the kill buyers came to pick the horse up for slaughter.
Now this is unacceptable behaviour, I have no problem with people wanting to eat horse meat, however the horses should be transported, kept and destroyed humanely. Which is certainly questionable in the evidence that I have heard and the photos that I have seen.

Sorry for such a long essay but I really feel like people should hear about what happens to these horses and if this hadn’t been brought to peoples attention how many of these horses would just slip under the radar.
August 6, 2011 at 10:34 #367353Have read it, findsara, and difficult to know what to say. Reminded me of my book ‘Horse Heaven’; a fictional account of several American racehorses all of which are either in an upward or downward spiral. Sadly, our American friend pointed out to me that the author, Jane Smiley does not have the best track record when it comes to the after racing care of her own horses..bit like reading Black Beauty and being told that Anna Sewell had been prosecuted by the RSPCA for cruelty to animals. Alas, it’s the downside of our sport [well, one of them] and I don’t know what can be done other than highlight such things and support as many horse welfare charities as possible. Thanks for pointing it out.

I knew things like this do go on but unless those who do this on a regular basis can be brought to account it will continue and more horses will suffer.
You just feel so helpless, surely someone knows a way to stop this wicked and cruel processing of horses that could be rehomed especially in a country as big as America.
