Denman was fantastic.
Absolutely tore them apart, with top weight.
Great effort from the horse.
Decent jumper too.
December 1, 2007 at 16:13 #128188Quite simply one of the most spectacular performances I’ve seen on a racecourse in my time, I can’t even begin to imagine what RPR he’ll get for that. I wonder if Nicholls is still so insistent about him coming on for the run!
As for Ruby’s decision on GC day, I’d imagine he’ll will stick with Kauto Star, through loyalty to the horse if nothing else. But then again, not a bad choice to have is it?

Was just going to make a post on the same subject.
Does he go on Denman and leave Sam Thomas to ride Kauto Star, or does he stay loyal to Kauto Star and leave Sam Thomas with Denman.
Either way, it is going to be a very strong outfit that Paul Nicholls has out there.
December 1, 2007 at 16:21 #128196This is the sort of afternoon that makes me realise why I love this game – it’s the anticipation of witnessing performances like this; after watching the footage of the great weight carrying performances of the past, then to go on and see this – magical! I do hope Strong Flow is ok after his fall, would have loved for him to be placed…..
December 1, 2007 at 16:24 #128198Great performance, but I’m not sure if it’s up to Kauto Star / Exotic Dancer’s level. Can’t take anything away from him, but I did think he looked a little tired at the end. Must watch the race again.
Fabulous racing today, a joy.
December 1, 2007 at 16:44 #128202Denman would give Exotic Star weight and a start and still beat him. That was an awesome performance today. Is he the reincarnation of Mill House, I wonder.
I think Sam Thomas would choose to stick with Denman, but I agree that Ruby Walsh will probably plump for Kauto Star, given the choice. But that could change.
It sure is a toughie.
Gambling Only Pays When You're Winning
December 1, 2007 at 17:08 #128211It was a very good performance but let’s not get too carried away. Arkle used to concede weight on a regular basis to Gold Cup class rivals. Denman has done it once and you would think a miracle had occurred. It will be interesting to see what happens but in terms of quality I think this was a pretty average Hennessy – of the others only Bible Lord travelled like a decent horse and he obviously didn’t stay. Having said that I would definitely take Denman over Kauto Star.
December 1, 2007 at 17:21 #128215Brilliant performance. Does anyone think that there are any holes in it?
Or is the widespread consensus that he beat very good horses?December 1, 2007 at 17:23 #128217Tremendous performance from Denman today but I won’t be getting carried away just yet. It’s easy to hype up a horse after a great performance but I still think Denman will have to find more to be up there with Kauto and Exotic Dancer. Until we see him matched up against the top two he’s just another contender, albeit an excellent one
Can’t wait for the Gold Cup now as it’s shaping up to be a cracker barring any injuries.
December 1, 2007 at 17:32 #128219I hate to be the bearer of bad news, stilvi, but Arkle isn’t racing anymore.
As staying handicaps go it was a pretty decent race – Knowhere racing off 151, the same mark Trabolgan ran from when victorious a couple of years ago – and to win in such an emphatic manner, on his reappearance and under top weight signals only one thing – he’s a proper, top class racehorse. And in today’s realm of top class racehorses (class can be relative, stilvi) he’s right there at the top of the tree.
Impressive animal, stunning effort.
December 1, 2007 at 17:35 #128220Brilliant performance. Does anyone think that there are any holes in it?
Or is the widespread consensus that he beat very good horses? The thing that impressed me was the way he just left them in his wake so to speak coming round the back straight.
Once he came into the corner, he had a decent lead and all he had to do really was to jump the final fences well and keep going in the same way he was doing throughout the race.
The other market leaders were a bit hit and miss. Snowy Morning fell, Abragante didnt really make any impression when asked to, add that to the way Denman was travelling, and you have a very good performance and a decent victory.

The only slight ‘hole’ I’d put in the performance is that he won off 161, when I (and I’d imagine many others) believed prior to today that a properly fit Denman is better than that particular mark.

Already wrote in another thread. He won what turned out to be a very bad Hennessy……..take the 3 behind same weights swap Kauto for D, both 100 fit and Kauto would be 1/4 to beat them and would do so without breaking sweat.
One thing I will say is at the beginning of the year Denman was still a novice and it was an excellent perforamce but it’s still a far cry from winning the Gold Cup…….Without Kauto I would be a worried man if I owned ED but other than that nothing has changed.
Ruby will ride the winner barring accidents and I have no doubt in which one he will ride.
Going to be a lot of hype and they will blow this one all out of proportion….Arkle V Mill House all over again and about time….can see the headlines and the build up now………….I bet Kauto again today after Denam did me a huge favour…..hope they pour the cash on D and I’ll be sticking more on kauto if I get 11/4
December 1, 2007 at 18:22 #128229Carvill’s Hill, but without the kinks.
I was massively impressed.
December 1, 2007 at 18:30 #128230Awesome!!!
That’s all that needs to be said – the perfect ten!!!
December 1, 2007 at 18:53 #128235Denman was hugely impressive today, but as regards the Arkle – Mill House comparisons………….surely a better one would be Arkle – Flyingbolt , as they’re stablemates ? A mouth-watering clash for sure in March. Let’s hope both remain sound.
I love KS, but on that jumping performance I’d have to have Denman.December 1, 2007 at 19:16 #128244Flying Bolt was never anywhere near good enough to take on Arkle….they both beat the same horse and they ran a line and said oh look he’s almost as good……….Mill House was a far superior horse.
In know way at this time would I even dream of puting Denman up there with the greats……….he’s won a poxy Hennessy that a hundred good horses that have run in the past could have won.
The Arkle V Mill House reference was aimed at what the newspapers will be saying……….Kauto has acheived much more than Denman…….he is the better horse and he and possibly Nick Dundeee are the only horses I have seen I rate and can talk about in the same breath as "Himself"
Kauto will go down in history as a Superstar and Denman will likely be remembered as a very good horse and right now that is all he has shown me to be………Todays race was not good enough to make Denman 6/4 fav (Corals) that’s a joke
