Denman looked a little ponderous at his fences to me in the closing stages for the Sun Alliance. Grasshopper has it spot on in regard the one i’m talking about so maybe i’d clutching at straws a little bit but he’s already jumped around Cheltenham and to me Denman looked workmanlike at best over 2m 5f. Turko’s interesting with all the allowances ala Star Du Mohaison and he impressed me at Aintree the other day.
Should make to be an interesting few months down at Ditcheat.
December 1, 2007 at 14:51 #5833That was an absolutely fantastic performance.
Roll on Denman Vs Kauto Star.
December 1, 2007 at 14:53 #128155get on Denman for the gold cup, jumps better then kauto will be interesting to see how he will be under pressure. Top performance
December 1, 2007 at 14:55 #128156Really exciting performance. Kauto Star, Exotic Dancer & Denman. The Gold Cup could be some race.
December 1, 2007 at 14:56 #128157Kauto’s a fantastic animal, but surely there’s only one winner over the Gold Cup course after that performance?
Stunning.
December 1, 2007 at 14:58 #128158Absolutely stupendous – this is the Gold Cup winner. Reminded me so much of Mill House as he powered round the track.
December 1, 2007 at 14:59 #128160Thomas was looking round with 2 miles to go!
Well almost
Incredible performance
December 1, 2007 at 15:03 #128164Maybe the short list for the 2007 TRF Horse of the Year award was compiled a couple of weeks too early.
The other thought I had was that Ruby must have had mixed emotions as he watched, having missed out on yet another big race. He must also be grimacing at the thought of having to choose between the two Nicholl’s champions one day.
If you had the choice between riding Denman and Kauto Star at Cheltenham in the Gold Cup and had to decide today who would it be?
I think Ruby would go for Kauto Star, as things stand, but it’d be a brave call after today.
December 1, 2007 at 15:11 #128167Excuse my ignorance, but on the subject of Gold Cup contenders is there any news regarding Star De Mohaison, War Of Attrition and Kicking King?
December 1, 2007 at 15:18 #128168Outstanding performance of jumping and galloping from Denman, a joy to watch
He’s one of my favourites, but even I thought he had too much on his plate first time out, with that weight on testing ground. They said he would improve with the run and if that’s the case it’s going to be a great Gold Cup next March!
Imagine having to ride Ruby’s cast off in the GC
December 1, 2007 at 15:19 #128169Excuse my ignorance, but on the subject of Gold Cup contenders is there any news regarding Star De Mohaison, War Of Attrition and Kicking King?
Not good enough, not good enough, won;t come back!
December 1, 2007 at 15:21 #128170It is hard to fancy anything outside the front two at the moment imo
December 1, 2007 at 15:24 #128171SDM – After Christmas
WOA – In light work but could struggle to be back in time for February even
Kicking King – Conditions hurdle on New Years eveOf the 3 above I think that only kicking King could challenge the likes of Denman, Kauto Star and Exotic Dancer, but as pointed out it is unlikely he will come back as good as what he was
Just to reiterate the comments above – it was a fantastic performance by Denman. Really enthusiastic horse with the attitude to match his physical ability
December 1, 2007 at 15:31 #128174Kicking King at his very, very, very best is still unlikely to give either Kauto Star or Denman much of a race in all honesty, and if either of the Nicholls horses don’t win the Gold Cup I’ll be astounded.
As for who gets the leg up on the big day, I would hazard a guess Ruby will stick with Kauto Star…he’ll have a scrap on his hands if he wants to ride Denman, that’s for sure!
December 1, 2007 at 15:41 #128176Yes, that was a magnificent performance from Denman.
I loved the way that Thomas just oozed confidence and rode the horse accordingly. Excellent round of jumping, put his rivals to the sword a long way out – and this was by a horse humping that weight around in one of the toughest handicap chases in the calendar.
As I write though, I have just heard a popping noise – could that be the sound of Katchit’s bubble bursting – though personally, I don’t think it was a bad performance and it certainly doesn’t rule him out of the Champion Hurdle picture.

December 1, 2007 at 15:43 #128177I have to say I was disappointed with Katchit. Looked a boy against men at the last. If he can’t account for Al Eile he isn’t going to win a Champion Hurdle.
December 1, 2007 at 15:43 #128178It doesn’t put him out of the Champion Hurdle picture completely, MikkyMo, but would you bet against Harchibald after an effort like that? Rarely does he put in such a performance, and even more rarely does he clear away (in his own way) from rivals.
Two (future) festival winners in one day – can’t beat that.
