I know i will get shot down if flames but when you have a horse like denman who is genuine and keeps galloping who has developed a heart problem ultimately just like a human it can take its toll any doctor will tell you exersize is good for the heart, but he does not expect you to fill a backpack with stones and run up a hill and denman is doing just that in handicaps in particular, personally i think these things do take there toll, anyway lets hope he comes back to form next time.
February 14, 2010 at 12:05 #276559Paul Nicholls told us nothing new this morning…
The RP should have got his post-race comment at 14.25 yesterday afternoon!
February 14, 2010 at 12:36 #276564Good afternoon everyone.
I’ve been through the race many times, heard what the interested and not so interested parties have to say and have come to one conclusion.Denman wins the Gold Cup.
Fill your boots with everything bar the kitchen sink.
Yesterday was a blip,he fluffed his lines in the dress rehearsal.
Nothing much to see really, all will be well come the big day.Kauto will be put in his rightful place, again, and the mighty Tank basking in deserved glory.
Get on now.
You know, just know it makes sense.
February 14, 2010 at 13:16 #276571On yesterday’s display, mistakes or not, Denman has a mountain to climb to beat Kauto Star.
He needs to turn up at Cheltenham a different horse (Arkle would be good) to trouble KS, although I wouldn’t give up hope that he might.
February 14, 2010 at 13:22 #276573Good afternoon everyone.
AP’S record needs no second introduction but i have said to many in the past his record when riding for Paul Nicholls is it’s fair to say modest, so why could they not stand by Sam Thomas when he had his nightmare last year.
Cheers.

February 14, 2010 at 14:18 #276587Makes me laugh how people jump on the band waggon about Mccoy, thats WHY he is champion jockey! He rides more favourites than anyone else, he was very good in the early days, when, by coincidence i suspect you lot will say, he rode for the incredibly prolific trainer martin pipe, ever since then he rides more odds on shots than anyone. It made me laugh a few years ago that it took him almost 10 years to ride his biggest priced winner, a 33-1 shot!!!!! says it all!
As for Iris’s Gift, BG rode him in his first race over fences against non novices, and he jumped better than he ever did for mccoy.
The difference between mccoy on denman and ruby on master minded is ruby sat tight!!! and took the blame, non of that from mr mccoy!HE WILL NOT WIN A GOLD CUP WITH MCCOY ON HIS BACK
Correct!! The people saying this now will be proved correct in March like they have already been proved correct by their concern over McCoy getting the ride in the first place.
How exactly will it be "proved correct"
Denman is currently 7/2 to win and 5/4 to win without Kauto Star. Yet you think if he does not win outright then it "proves" McCoy was not the right man for the job?
Let’s take the bookies mark up off and estimate his chance as 20%. How exactly does it prove anything if Denman does not win? When the estimate suggests Denman has an 80% chance of NOT winning.
I could see your arguement if Denman was 80% certain to win, but he isn’t.
Value Is EverythingFebruary 14, 2010 at 14:26 #276589Some amount of rubbish written on this thread. Ruby and Master Minded had a disagreement of sorts at the last fence yesterday but there was barely a word about it because he managed somehow to stand up. McCoy was unfortunate and I can’t see how the outcome would have been different if someone else was riding. The horse was clearly below form yesterday.

No Imperial, the difference was Ruby diffused the incident quickly by blaming himself,if only AP had done the same and said i was on a hiding to nothing from the off as the horse is blatantly unfit! Schooling in public springs to mind! Imagine if that was Ferdy Murphy with 1/7 shot,he"d be in Portman square before the Breakfast train pulled out of York station!

I think in a way, I’d be more inclined to back Denman for the Gold Cup now than I would have been before the race yesterday. If Denman had jumped every fence perfectly & won by 10 lengths, the ‘new’ jockey would have learned nothing. On the back of a big shock like that, AP will go into the big one knowing a little more about what Denman can & cannot do.
Part of me (the small part of me that thinks horses are capable of thinking) thinks that Denman might have done that to show McCoy who’s boss.

The difference is that McCoy’s appointment was met with a well publicised division of opinion.
Taking into consideration the horse he was riding and the attention this race was going to demand with a view to Cheltenham, the racing public waited with bated breath to see how the partnership was going to fare.
The outcome, whether or not you believe McCoy to be at fault in anyway, put him in a position to be criticised.

I’d be more inclined to think that Denman has posed more questions than answers for McCoy. Paul Nicholls stated that he will not allow McCoy to ride Denman at home ‘given the nature of the beast’ ie Denman’s inconsistency at home.
If Denman has proven to McCoy who’s boss, he may as well be 100/1.
February 14, 2010 at 16:00 #276617How stubborn are the connections I wonder.
The only way out PR wise (as I see it) is to miss the GC, hope the fracas dies down then get Ruby or Sam back on board at say Punchestown
Anyone wan’t to buy a second hand bus?
February 14, 2010 at 16:33 #276630Interested to know if there was much won and lost on the exchanges!? Were there any significant movements?
February 14, 2010 at 17:57 #276657I don’t know the answer but I am sure someone on here will.
Has any Gold Cup winner fallen in his previous race?
February 14, 2010 at 18:11 #276660Yes; the one that McCoy rode that fell heavilly in the King George..Mr Mulligan [not sure if he had another race prior to the Gold Cup; don’t think that he did].

Most definately were
…….in the lower regions by those that backed at 1-6 i would imagine
February 14, 2010 at 18:21 #276665Hen Knight once said he wasn’t right for Best Mate; there’s a big difference between being the "best jockey" and the "best jockey for the horse".
Exactly. Some of the views on here ranging from "how many winners have you ridden the and my gran could ride denman" to "how dare you criticise such a jockey/man" are best voiced on the Morning Line rather than a forum
Even the "best" jockey in the world isnt going to be the optimum choice for every horse. This is the real point
And Mccoy is one extreme of jockeyship style (Murphy being other end of pole for instance) and Denman is a fairly unique horse.

TAPK,
Ruby "diffused the situation by blaming himself" granted. Even though he did nothing wrong that I could see. But he’s in the enviable position of knowing his ride is safe whatever he says. Ruby won’t be replaced on Master Minded. Yet if McCoy blamed himself (in public), there would be an even greater clammer for Thomas.Value Is Everything -
