I always find it strange that athletes have a bell that tells them they are on their last lap. Fine if your’e running 10,000 m but 800m or 1500m? Can’t they count either? Or is there another reason? I honestly don’t know :? I think that these jocks should be counting their own laps IMO.

It is part of the IAAF Competition Rules that ‘Lap Scorers’ keep a record of the laps completed by all athletes in races beyond 1500m. One Lap Scorer is responsible for maintaining a display, at the finish line, of the number of laps completed. It is a further requirement that the final lap shall be signalled to every athlete, usually by the sounding of a bell.

I’m beginning to love this new ‘argue with mansun’ feature…if you charged a monthly fee, Corm, you’d be minted by Easter :D

The problem people have mansun, if in fact any problem really exists, is that you regularly appear to contradict yourself and attempt to argue points which simply don’t make any rational sense. The regulation of tipsters to ‘save’ addicted gamblers, for example, is complete and utter nonsense and it’s not unheard of for sarcastic remarks to be made. It happens to the best of us, but the difference is most will take it as it is meant, and not our back against the wall and start firing.

I was, admittedly, a little rude to NV on another thread and I’m not so full of myself as to not admit that – apologies by the way, NV – but it hasn’t descended into anything like the furore you have created.

I would be interested to know although will never know just how much money worldwide was bet on Harringay.

I feel sure that if you put all those punters who backed Harringay together and put them (probably on a football pitch or something larger) with O’Regan I do not think they would say "oh well he made a mistake" and that would be that. I would imagine they would murder him and rightly so.

I would imagine many thousnads if not millions is bet world wide on UK horse racing and this sort of incompetence should not be tolerated.

If jockeys got proper bans rather than punitive ones then it would get rid of these errors.

And no I did not bet Harringay I backed Cathedral Rock.

I just get sick and tired of our so called respected journalists spouting out excuses for what is in effect sheer incompetence and stating well these things happen. They should not happen at all in todays day and age.
