I withdraw my last statement as I was probably clutching at straws. Sous Les Cieux is surely too slow for the Neptune, and can’t win. I suspect if Boston Bob weren’t around we’d see him in the Albert Bartlett.
February 12, 2012 at 23:40 #391022Can’t be that sane Ginger if he entered him in the Neptune; a race you say he can’t possibly win because he wouldn’t get the trip.
You’ve got a point there Hurdy.
May be "sane as ever" as in he’s never been sane.
Entering Finians Rainbow for the Gold Cup is throwing away money.
Value Is EverythingFebruary 12, 2012 at 23:43 #391023Sous Le Cieux hasn’t been entered in the Albert Bartlett.
He won the Royal Bond, beating a horse that is fancied for the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle. So what he finished 2nd in the 2m 2f Deloitte? Ruby (and all the other jockeys) completely ignored the front-runner sent off at 189BSP.
Look at Hardy Eustace’s campaign the season he won the Neptune. Or Fundamentalist. Or Massini’s Maguire.
I dread to think what price Fingal Bay would be if he’d run in the race today. He’s probably be about 12/1 after finishing about 4th or 5th.
Boston Bob has run over 2m 4f on soft/heavy ground on all 3 racecourse appearances this season. Sous Le Cieux won the Grade 1 Royal Bond Hurdle over 2m and finished 2nd today over 2m 2f. Where do you think Boston Bob would have finished today had he run? 6th? 7th?
There’s only one winner of the Neptune and he finished 2nd today.

Surely to the Finians backers out there, that was a clue in itself that he’s not quick enough for the Champion Chase.
I’m sure I’ll get a post back regarding Sizing Europe last year holding Gold Cup entries also, but we all know that his owner was hell-bent on winning the top prize

I know he doesn’t hold an entry, but I reckon he would do were it not for Boston Bob. He finished like a stayer, not quick enough for me.

When judging a horse’s stamina/distance potential I’d rather look at what the horse has done on the racecourse. Finians Rainbow was going by far the best rounding the turn at Ascot, outstayed by Somersby (although Barry was caught napping a bit).
Finians didn’t seem to get home in the Arkle last season and Ghizao made ground on him late at Aintree.
All of those races Finians Rainbow wasn’t exactly staying on at the post. Even in the win at Kempton it was speed that enabled him to come through in the end.
I’ll give up betting if Finnian’s Rainbow wins the Gold Cup. He’ll need a complete character transplant.
Value Is EverythingFebruary 13, 2012 at 00:11 #391034I’m not for a second implying that Finians Rainbow could win the Gold Cup, Christ No!

It’s more the fact I believe that he isn’t the quickest, though yes it was speed that got him through against the slower Wishfull Thinking and the handicapper Oiseau De Nuit, and the fact he was even entered for the Gold Cup shows a mistrust on his owner’s and trainer’s behalf that he has the speed for the minimum trip.

Realise that Boz, just illustrating why I think connections were throwing away money by entering Finian’s Rainbow in the Gold Cup.Your logic would usually be fair enough Boz. But by what he’s done on the racecourse, it’s not certain Finians will truly stay a strongly run 2 miles around Cheltenham and shows plenty of (may be even too much) speed.
Value Is EverythingFebruary 13, 2012 at 00:51 #391039Good enough
February 14, 2012 at 00:38 #391226Nicky Henderson talking about Finian’s Rainbow. "We were running him over longer trips but he just wasn’t quite doing it and I realised despite his breeding he’s better at 2 miles" or some sh!t like that
Now Sprinter Sacre is on the scene Nick is thinking long term and sees no sense in both going for the same target (QMCC) next season.
I always thought FR looked the type to do well in the likes of the King George in the future but the Gold Cup this year?
That stinks of an over enthusiastic owner being involved. - AuthorPosts
