Just noticed that Auteuil host the Dawn Run Listed Hurdle tomorrow; nice to know she is still remembered in France. Her achievements were almost unbelievable; GC/CH double, GC as virtual novice (i think in record time, could be corrected on this), beat the 2-mile champion (Buck House) over 2 miles, Irish/British/French Champion Hurdler.
I am usually critical of today’s trainers for not running their horses enough, undermining the rest of the season by hyper-concentration on the Festival, but the greed of Dawn Run’s connections showed the other side of the coin.
I first saw her in Punchestown in the then Forenoughts Hurdle (myself and a few other impecunious students used to go midweek racing, only two of us still above ground). I’m no paddock expert but I thought she looked magnificent; led from the start and ran the others, including Hartstown, the previous yrs Supreme Novice winner, into the ground. Probably unbeatable over hurdles at 2+1/2 or 3 milesJune 26, 2023 at 17:31 #1653673“Probably unbeatable over hurdles at 2+1/2 or 3 miles:” https://youtu.be/2Smrjgbx-0c
Possibly not.^
Though tbf they’d run her only 24 hours earlier!
She was a fine mare, who did a Champion Hurdle/Cheltenham Gold Cup double yet to be equalled, but the gender allowance was surely instrumental in both of those victories and narrowly-beaten Cima wouldn’t exactly be the greatest Champion Hurdle runner up ever.
As for the Cheltenham Gold Cup, I was on serial non-stayer in the race Wayward Lad at 12/1 win only, so I can never forgive her!
I agree she deserved an infinitely better end, though, and it’s nice that she’s remembered.

You can only beat the field of the dry

Get over it man, I was on Sunnyhillboy (win only) in the 2012 National, but forgive Neptune Collonges for spoiling the party. Especially as I give Paul Nichols the perfect tactics (which was meant for his other runner Niche Market.

Until now.

I mean he was third to his stable companions Kauto Star and Denman. He made KS pull out everything for second place in between his 2 victories.

Don't mess with mister in between.June 26, 2023 at 22:55 #1653716I’d agree she was not an outstanding champion at 2 miles Ian, but at 2+1/2 or 3 even The Machine at his peak would have had trouble
June 27, 2023 at 07:49 #1653727The clip Gaye Brief was beating her in was of the now Aintree Hurdle, 2m5f then and 2m4f to this day, though as stated and in her defence she was having her second race in 24 hours.
Dawn Run was a talented, versatile and likeable mare, and she remains the only racehorse ever to win the Champion Hurdle and the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
But I cannot ignore the gender allowance and what she was up against so, in winning two Champion Hurdles during the Golden Era of hurdling and finishing runner up to an above average Cheltenham Gold Cup winner in his stablemate Little Owl, I’d say Night Nurse achieved more in the Champion Hurdle/Cheltenham Gold Cup department.
But it’s a game of opinions and she was a cracking mare – even if she did nail my 12/1 win only bet on Wayward Lad!

The Gold Cup was not in my opinion as strong as could be, but going right handed he won at 2 miles up to 3 miles against the best of his time.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"June 27, 2023 at 15:01 #1653742Desert Orchid was magnificent, a brilliant jumper, so versatile, not afraid of defeat nor to carry big weights, connections not obsessed by the festival. That he only won the GC is a reflection on the GC rather than him.
I might gently point out that he was well behind Dawn Run the only time they met in the CH. He was only a novice, but Dawn Run, as a novice, gave Gaye Brief a close race in the Aintree Hurdle, having won a handicap the day before. Also his novice chase season was not outstanding, only after that he began to really blossom, whereas the mare won the GC as a virtual novice, who knows what heights she might have reached but for her ownersJune 27, 2023 at 22:31 #1653769It’s well documented that Dessie was better going right handed than left, but in my opinion he tried whichever way he ran. He only won twice left handed, first time at Aintree and the second in the Gold Cup. The fact that Dawn Run beat him going left handed doesn’t show Dessie true potential. If it was at Kempton it could have been a different result. Dawn Run was involved in a fatal accident abroad (I think jn France) just after winning her Gold Cup. So wasn’t able to defend her title, but was well fancied before the incident.

Don't mess with mister in between.June 28, 2023 at 01:00 #1653770I hadn’t realised that Niche Market had been moved to P Nicholls. Or, if I did I’d forgotten. We had a lot of fun withNiche Market on the Grand National forum, didn’t we!
June 28, 2023 at 10:02 #1653783The Owner of Niche Market had joined the other forum for a while, the year that NM had transferred from his old stable to his new one. He seemed a nice guy.
