I had the pleasure of talking to Dave at Nottingham races in the Autumn,
we were discussing Ante-post wagers, I was telling him about my successful wagers on the "Duke of Marmalade" winning the Prince of wales at 14/1 and the King george at 16/1, i told him i had also backed the Duke to win the Arc at 33/1 and how confident i was of victory! His reply was very humble and quite modestly put! Zarkava will p**s it! He also said that his only Ante-post bets are laid on the Tuesday of the race when the 5 day decs appear and was very anti-Ante-post betting full stop! I was impressed with the guy!

Not that I am comparing Mr. Nevison with the Mafia. I wonder if his ex thinks he’s a nice character.

Seems a fairly bizarre comment to me! Show me many people who will regale you with glowing reports of what a nice character their ex is! It’s hardly a subjective opinion, is it?!

I found Dave’s column in the Racing and Football Outlook pretty witty and entertaining.

I didn’t see anyone disparaging the late Phil Bull’s personality, though I got the impression from what I did read about him, I’d find Dave very much more congenial.

As for being guided by other people regarding horses’ chances in various races, I’m often surprised by how open professional tipsters are with some of the value bets they tout.

One reason, I think, is that for most of us the game is so hazardous, anyway, we’re not going to distort the market by identifying which of their tips ar going to be duds and which, "the good oil". For the pros, confidence, value and staking must be paramount, but I think for most of us, we bet a bit more freely, to put it mildly.

The aim underlying the betting the culture is not basically to spread round information, but the opposite, so I’m always surprised to read that people are disappointed and a little shocked that people "in the know" didn’t prove a reliable source of information. Of course, when they’re paid as tipsters, it would be wrong as well as foolish not to try to provide a decent flow of tips. Though I suspect that for their own purposes, some tipsters will occasionally spread disinformation. Good tips from trainers and connections, from all sources, really, I see as a windfall more than anything.

Secrecy, I believe, is often even viewed by connections as an asset in relation to a horse’s chances in a particular race. If they are unconsidered, they may be able to poach more ground than otherwise in a part of a race, so sometimes, I think there is not just the price to consider.

Point is to do what Nevison himself said he did to his wife; no matter what you or I might think of his racing brain (I do have respect for his racing knowledge) will not imo make him a nice character.
