As IanDavies said Maxwell was getting plenty of plaudits for staying on board at Aintree when plenty of professionals would have went out the side door. So he’s not all bad.
By all means criticise his mistake the other day but this talk of him giving up is nonsense.
As for amateurs in general how many of you have backed winners in the amateur races at Cheltenham by going for the best jockey in the race rather than the best horse. If every amateur was like Mullins or Codd it wouldn’t been as easy to pick the winner would it?
April 20, 2021 at 13:55 #1537298I’ve got to agree with Homer and Patriot, and I have seen the the fall. It’s not the
cleanest of jumps at the last, goes through the top a bit, but not enough to bring the
horse down or unship Maxwell. It maybe does slightly unbalance Maxwell, but it’s when
the horse jinks a little to his left (watch his head) after the fence that Maxwell’s
balance heads the other way and he gets unshipped. Would a professional have stayed on?
probably, but these things happen. Think of Jamie Moore on Goshen after the last fence
in the Triumph, these things happen. He’ll no doubt be kicking himself and just have to
accept he will get a bit of flack, it didn’t look great. He’s not the first, he certainly
won’t be the last, but as an amateur jockey I think he’s shown over the piece that he’s fit
enough to carry on.April 20, 2021 at 17:27 #1537304David Pitcher was an adult and wanted to race so it was up to him, too.

Exactly the reason why I never bet on these circus races. Here we have a case of a “jockey” effectively jumping off the odds-on favourite after the last when on course to win a 3 horse race, leaving a 16-1 shot as winner. That he is merely being described as an incompetent who shouldn’t be riding on this forum is a credit to his reputation (and the calibre of our members) as I am sure there are plenty who lost money accusing him of worse. If racing is intent on persisting with the anachronism of amateur races masquerading as real racing on a card, perhaps it’s time to look at limiting the betting offers and treating them as the curiosity they are.
April 20, 2021 at 19:55 #1537320Those aren’t the sole criteria I gave Quelle Farce, and comparing David Maxwell to David Pitcher would be doing the former a huge injustice.
April 30, 2021 at 18:46 #1538792He did pretty well there didnt he? Well done to him and Bob & Co.
April 30, 2021 at 19:06 #1538797Really pleased to see him win that, well done to all involved.
April 30, 2021 at 19:11 #1538798Cost me a tidy sum today but still pleased for the bloke, he deserves it.
April 30, 2021 at 19:13 #1538799Delighted for him. Did very well in that finish
Rises his strike rate even further.
April 30, 2021 at 19:33 #1538806Nice to hear them say on RUK that the biggest cheer at Cheltenham today was from people watching him win that race at Punchestown!
April 30, 2021 at 19:37 #1538808Great win. The horse should get the praise though it ran all the way to the line very very game
April 30, 2021 at 19:47 #1538814Good interview and did a good job of winning without using his whip. Someone told him during the week to look a bit more like Ruby Walsh in the saddle. Wasn’t quite up to that, but still a great finish he rode.
April 30, 2021 at 20:21 #1538824Great to see, a deserved big race win for horse and jockey.

Speaking as a Point-to-Point/Hunters’ Chase punter of many years, it’s far from a “circus” and it’s simply a case of needing to know your jockeys as much as your horses.
Though we all have our favourites and pet hates, outside of claiming riders the difference between the best professionals and the worse journeymen is on average maybe a couple of pounds.
Make that a couple of STONE among the amateurs.
But put the work in getting to know them and it’s a rewarding betting medium.
David Maxwell isn’t the best, but he isn’t the worst either and he’s worked hard to improve himself.
He found Bob And Co unrideable at Warwick last season, IMO he had a soft unseat on Captain Cattistock at Doncaster and he basically fell off Shantou Flyer on the run in at Wincanton recently.
But I think he’s given Bob And Co an absolute peach of a ride at Punchestown here so credit where it’s due.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"May 1, 2021 at 09:37 #1539005Felt he gave Bob and Co a really good and brave ride yesterday, horse made a few bad mistakes and though the opportunity presented itself, he didn’t gp wide for a clear sight(like a lot would) as he wanted covered up as long as possible and kept covered up until he was ready to strike.
His interviews on Rte before and after the race were brilliant too. He has a new fan here for sure -
