*My primary school project was a notebook containing details of all the racecourse in Britain. Thank you Mr Rich and Mr Bennett for encouraging me!

That’s brilliant.
I have to admit when I see the BHEST work at the racecourses, most days during term time, two things spring to mind.
Firstly how lucky children today are to have a racecourse as a classroom and who knows it may sow the seeds for future racegoers.
Secondly – how much more attractive teachers are nowadays. (Mrs Newman, bless her, was a lovely teacher but by no stretch of the imagination could she ever be called a stunner. On another note, in my early twenties our paths crossed again and although she kept telling me to call her Barbara I could only call her Mrs Newman – I just couldn’t bring myself to call my primary school teacher by her first name)
September 12, 2013 at 14:08 #450988Mr Rich used to compare selections with me for the big races. I remember he turned me over with his selection Blakeney beating my Prince Regent in the Derby. He was a fearsome old headmaster in the old style, but a lovely bloke once you found something in common!
I must have kept myself on the right side because I remember being allowed sole control of the Mexico 1968 Olympics results board in the hall. I would have been just approaching the age of 8 at that point, so they clearly had me down as the in-house sports nut from early on.
When Mr Bennett took over I used to borrow his newspaper at breaktime to work out the racing winners.
